TT Redlines
Hi everybody.
Is there much to choose between the 53 and 56 Redline engines???

It's mostly displacement. They're techincally the same motor, only the 56 is a stroked version (longer con-rod and slightly taller clearance in the firing chamber dome).
You can likely pick up a 53 for pretty much dirt cheap and it's a pretty ferocious motor overall. The 56 will likely be a little more sought after and obviously has some gains over the 53. But I doubt you'd be unhappy with either. They're even easier to tune than an OS or YS and they take the abuse really well. Mine should've blown up 4X by now and it's still alive. Can't say that for any of my OS, and YS seem to be more of a PITA than they're worth (or at least I haven't had very good luck with them yet).

My first engine was a 53. Easy to tune and runs great. Looking forward to trying a 56 some time next year.

I used to like OS motors but recently have found them a pain to tune.

Well, usually OS's are only a pain if you try and over-tune them. One click goes a huge distance and most people easily do 3-4 clicks without batting an eye at it. At least with the TT's, 3-4 clicks is pretty much the norm, but you see a noticeable difference in those clicks where on the OS it's a lot more subtle. Not sure why that is but I found the 53 to be a great motor overall. Same thing with the 39, but the carbs have a real bad tendancy to grenade on you so you have to keep an eye on them. They're cheap to fix in any event and it's usually not the catastrophic bearing throws like on OS rears. I've destroyed 3 hyper 50's from that same problem so I know the frustrating parts pretty well.
My major issue with YS is the O-WV. Even if I know I have the darn things in there the right direction it still never seems to vent and it chokes out the motor. I got tired of dealing with it and went back to an OS for the time being. The 53 is going to get rebuilt eventually, but for the time being nitro is completely on the back burner again.

What do you mean by "grenade on you"?

They come apart or screws fall out in flight. It's not enough to damage anything and I've had it happen on one of my OS's as well, but it seems to be a little more prolific on the TT motors. I know some people have swapped out to the OS carb on the 53 with some small mods and it's supposed to be bullet-proof, but I haven't attempted it myself just yet.

Like everyone has said be careful when tuning this engine.
As for the redline 53 it was very powerful and was very fuel efficient. But mine just took a dump on me. I had flown probably 6 flights that day with no issues. But on the last flight of the day the ring came apart on the motor and trashed piston sleeve and head. Even the local pros didnt know what went wrong. The engine had 20 flights on it. |

The TT's work great with an OS Carb on them. The stock carb is a POS.

The carb from an OS 50 Hyper is all that is needed. I've been making carb adapters for 2 years now. I take an OS carb and machine the body shorter, CNC machine the adapter and the TT53/56 comes to life.

TMoore, what would you charge for your adapter mod and carb machining if I were to send you my 60L carb?
