Close, it has more to do with special interest groups and a lack of common sense. Transport Canada now allows aerial photo and video operations under a new permitting process. It's slow and tedious, but the FAA is easy...just a simple NO.

I gather that many of the AP Pros have left RR, so I wonder how relevant its AP forum is these days, with hardly any traffic...

Seems like it. Every other day, more and more names with the gray strikethrough. Hope this forum gets ever more lively with informative, professional, and fun traffic.

The FAA is simple, you can't make money with any sort of flying vehicle unless it has an air worthiness certificate. You can't get an AWC for a UAV unless you are doing police survelliane/DOD/university research program. SO...

But you can take ground photo's for a price and toss in the aerial ones for free as a demonstration of potential future commercial offerings.

I know there are several AP operators out there..... Has the FAA ever told anyone to shut down their aerial services and/or websites ? Have any fines been imposed? Have the men in black shown up to impound your gear? Seriously? Just curious....

Default confessions of an A/P'er

I doubt there will be too many A/P'ers willing to say too much. It is just too easy to get slammed for doing something that you know is considered illegal.
I think most that are still doing A/P for hire are wisely keeping a very low profile and what they post is under the guise of "hobby related" photos or video.

And yea, there is a echoing sound every time I post on RR. Its like a ghost town

I believe one guy I've seen on various forums was asked to cease operations or face a fine in excess of 10k. He was reported to the FAA by a local pilot that was loosing AP business to him for a golf course. I've seen a couple other people that did receive cease letters from the FAA as well.
