"I 'am the one who lost control" exactly synchronized with the crash... was this planned ????

Great show anyway...

Congrats Kyle, I really enjoyed the part with the streamers. I have never seen that done with a heli before.

Likewise. I'm curious how many times in practice he snipped the streamers or wrapped them around a shaft.

The maneuvers seemed very well chosen to avoid that.

I hope Dave or Kyle will give us more info about the streamer segment. And what the used to release them so Kyle could do the piros.

Streamer deal?

trickybit is correct in that we had several successes and failures along the way in establishing which maneuvers the heli could fly, while keeping the streamers reliably in tack. Length was also a factor, as the streamers create a bunch of drag, and too short didn't look good, and too long created other problems.

Also, we needed to establishing a system in which we could transport the streamers from the pit area and around the field with the heli and streamers "ready to fly", which would also let the streamers play-out perfectly every time without tangles when the heli took-off.

We also had to try a couple of different streamer materials before hitting on the combination that looked OK, was strong enough to not tear, yet not too strong so it would not cut reliably (i.e. wrap-up on the main shaft if the streamer got into the disc). All in all, the creation of the "system" (including the release mechanism), took about 3 days (multiple flights per day, making adjustments each flight), before getting it to the point where it was 100% reliable every time.

The cross piece was created from spliced together Logo 600 booms, with a servo in the center actuating spliced together tail rotor control rods, supported along the booms by standard Logo tail rotor control rod guides, so at the ends of the booms, a cable loop attached to the streamers could be captured and released between two closely spaced rod guides via a TX switch.

All-in-all, a pretty simple system, that just took a little time to figure out.
