Great work! Yeah, unfortunately editing of a post is limited to the 1st 30 days or so.

Perhaps consider using the per-user based blog feature. Obviously you can update your blog any time you like. Perhaps ask admin to edit 1st post so you can add text to advise others to visit your blog. Just a suggestion.

Some Solar DS654 feedback from me...

I've had bad luck with them, even after doing the "foam" mod to keep the servo motor from backing out.

The airframe I got was used so I do not know how many flights were on it. First crash, one of the servos stopped working completely, no buzz, nothing. The heli main shaft broke so this servo issue resulted from the subsequent crash. I took the servo apart and I did not notice anything obvious. I.e. all of the power wires were still soldered on.

Replaced that servo and today this same airframe went in. This time I think the crash was caused by the servo (this was not the new replacement). Elevator servo was completely locked up and I could not physically move the servo arm. Took it apart and turns out the servo motor itself is completely seized. The servo motor pinion/shaft will not move at all.

Default Installing MKS DS470 cyclics and DS480 tail servo

We need to remove material from the frame, marked with red, in order to mount the elevator servo.

Tools needed for this

Done. This is not for the faint of heart or those who have never seen a Dremel before

We also need to cut away a little where the servo horn moves upward.

Default Part II

Cut away some from the corner as marked for the front elevator servo

Add shim between the servo and frame (blue in the pic) in order to have the link running straight

Modifying the servo horns is some work. The holes don't match up perfectly with the stockers. Tried first with the 2nd inner hole, but it does then not clear. So we have to user the inner one. Cut off the excess, and you must also dremel down the "raised part" in order for the ball link to sit properly and moove freely. For the tail I used the 2nd hole if I remember correctly. Make that one at least as far out as stock in order to have enough movement.

The treads of the balls are 1.9mm so I drilled the holes in the horns up to 1.6mm. Apply some Loctite and mount the balls.

Mounted!

I use these servos in my 450X too, and they seem both good and crash resistant.

The only thing I'm not 100% satisfied with is the tail performance. It seems to me that cyclic servos are not at all that critical. But it for sure is for the tail servo. My conclusion is that it may be worth getting a very good spec 20 gram servo (these are 10g) for the tail, for instance the MKS DS95i.

Notice how I also flipped the tail servo and reversed it (horn rearwards), in order to get better right/left weight balance. And more forward COG (this heli is a bit tail heavy).

Thx for looking!

Great info here. A little heads up Shyguy, using loctite on plastic is a no no. Use super glue as your "plastic loctite."

I had to do similar but a bit less cutting to my frame to install the Turnigy S306G servos.

For good 20g tail servo, try the Turnigy S306G. Very good deadband performance and good speed (although spec doesn't suggests so), speedy and torquey. Coreless motor (i.e. very responsive). And very cheap to boot.

Am looking at it but I have already a 95i, I would think that is THE micro servo to beat?

I'm sure the 95i must be good. The Turnigy S306G and KST 115/215 clone the MKS and also uses coreless motor (which is a must for tail performance, except of course brushless is even better). I have no complain with TGY/KST as tail servo.

EDIT: correction. It's 115 not 125.

I don't think so. I think heli this size even a good coreless double-bearing servo is good enough.

Ordered 5 of these to try:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=29043

Each servo costs the same as the DS76 gear set!! and they get great reviews.
If I break one I'll just swap the servo out. The HXT900 gear set may also fit and they are really cheap.

Lets just hope they fit and do the job. My stock cyclics have had it - one burned out and one has developed slop.

Thumbs up And boom!!!

That was it for me! The MKS DS95i tail servo turned this heli into a heli that I'm satisfied with! Tail holds ROCK SOLID now! Not wag, shakes - nothing!

So for me the conclusion is that for a perfect tail you need a good 20g servo. These are known to be good:
  • MKS DS95i
  • Turnigy S306G
  • KST 125/215
(the Turnigy and KSTs are clones of the MKS servo, I cannot personally confirm those but others like dCH can)

http://www.mks-servo.com.tw/goods.php?goods_id=ds95i

Turnigy TGY-306G:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...06sec_21g.html

KST 215:
http://www.kstsz.com/threestyle/ksts.../13531946.html

But the KST 125 (at least the one available now) seems to be a wing servo:
http://www.kstsz.com/threestyle/ksts.../11159673.html

-so I don't think this is an option. Do you guys mean this, the 115?
http://www.kstsz.com/threestyle/ksts.../11159685.html

At the same time I will then myself advise against these as tail servo optons:
  • MKS DS480
  • stock tail servo

Oops sorry. I meant KST 115 (non HV version of 215).

And my new servos turned up

Only reason I decided to change was because one of my stock servos burnt out and I didn't want to pay the sort of money they want for a replacement. Instead I have opted for these HKSCM9-6 from Hobby King:

Almost a straight swap for the stock servos. Very little to do. Positioned the ball at same distance as stock arm and got the blue light at 6 degrees.

Took them for two flights and they fly just like stock servos.

Only weigh 10g and best part is they only cost $3!!!! same price as a stock servo gear set! Oh and they can run at 6V.

Next job for me; fit the zyx-s as the BX is about to be moved into my new Mini-Protos

Great! The White Knight from the UK!

Now go crash so we can see how they hold up!

What's that "blue light" you're talking about?... Wait, just checked the manual: Step L!
I've always skipped that one, I must start doing that I understand now

Yep, step J in fact. I don't really care how they crash at $3 each
I don't normally crash anyway unless a servo burns out on me
