Question EC5 connectors

I need to order some EC5 connectors for my new Turnigy packs and also for the ESC for the Protos. Do I use female connectors for the battery packs and male connectors for the ESC or does it matter? I know with the Deans connectors you use the female connectors on the battery packs and male connectors on the ESC. Just want to double check on the EC5 connectors before I placed my order. Thanks!

You want females on the battery so the hot ends don't brush together or against a conductor and spark/short.

Edit: I don't know what EC5's are, this advice pertains to any conductor where the male has contact surfaces exposed (e.g. bullets, deans).

Wouldn't buying Deans instead be a better idea in the long run? Deans seem to be more common on most batteries. I just lopped off the bullet connectors on my Turnigy's and soldered on some Deans.

I really don't like the Deans connectors. I have a hard time getting them apart once I need to disconnect the pack and they are hard to get ahold of and not much surface area. I prefer/like the EC5 connectors better. These are EC5 connectors:

These Bullet connectors are much easier to deal with over the Deans, I have used EC3, Deans and now Hobbycity connectors. With the thick wire these Turnigy packs come in Deans are hard to solder and are no longer the standard. We NEED a standard, but in the meantime I now use 4mm bullets that are the same on all Flightmax and Turnigy packs. Cheap too, 10 for 3 bucks.

Default HXT 4mm Gold Connector w/ Protector

Yea I was wanting to get those connectors so I wouldn't have to change my Turnigy packs. At the time when I ordered my Turnigy pack those connectors were not in stock. Its going to cost me about $58 to change all my packs I'll use on my Protos to EC5 so I'll have to see how much shipping will be on two packs of the HXT 4mm Gold Connector w/ Protector. I'll have to see if there is anything else I need to order from HK to combined the shipping. Maybe another pack for the Protos.

Hi,

On the Protos (and any other heli), you want just these connectors, Anderson Power Poles:

+1, thanks for that link Frank!

I used Power Poles way back in the early 90's (when electrics weren't cool). When I got back into the hobby about 4 years ago, I went with Deans (because everybody said they were great). Wow, did I soon come to hate those miserable damn things.

I sold a big sandwich bag full of them for $10 at a swap meet, and converted back to Power Poles (crimped with the good tool) and haven't looked back.

Whether you crimp (with the proper tool) or solder, I'm convinced Power Poles are the most user-friendly connector available at the moment. And have been for years.

EC5 are for bascially 8-12S applictions, they work awesome, no need for a small 6S bird though, the ec3s' in this case are more then enough for Protos 6s applications.

I was using EC3, but it was a PITA to get the wires in some times.
Switched to EC5.....hello hello, the packs seem to have a bit more punch, dont get as warm and are taking less MaH for a charge.

Before on EC3 I had a customer data log a flight.
I was deliberately all in the corners and as hard on pitch as I could.
Flight to me was horrible, but I wanted to see worst case numbers.
Pulled 79.5a and 1480watts.

Have not had a chance to data log with the ec5's.

could all be in my head, but my mate flies my Protos too.
Before on ec3 my weekest pack was struggling on normal tic tocs, even aileron.
After the change we can now coax an ugly 4 point tic toc out of it, and regular tic tocs are do-able.

Anyway, thats my 2 cents

Or you just got better at collective management in tic-tocs

Straight after changing plugs?
Hmmm.

Anyway, either way, I well pleased

In case anyone's interested, I'm using Traxxas TRX high current connectors, and I will never use anything else now (unless something better comes out). I've tried Deans, EC3, EC5, and some other off-brands. The Traxxas are very easy to solder together, are very sturdy, and impossible to connect backwards.

Plus they have a huge area to grip when you need to pull them apart. I really can't believe that more people don't use them! The only limitation is that they are harder to use with the fattest of wires. (But still totally usable)

i'm switching over to ec5 connectors as well.

I hate how difficult deans connectors are to plug in as well as the small surface area to grab when you're trying to unplug them.

My deans are REALLY easy to connect. I used to have a hard time connecting them but that was before I started plugging a pair together while soldering. That trick seems to work well.

I've seen factory soldered EC3's on some trainer planks that were just as hard as deans to pull apart. And I hate having to push the bullet into that housing.

You know those connectors are rated only 30A, right?

Crap I didn't know that! I know there's guys using them on Trex 600e's at my FF. Maybe they have low Amp HV setups? Guys even use them on Outrage 550's.

I will look into that, but they never get warm or anything when I fly. I will keep them, they are just soooo good. Thanks for letting me know

OK can't find female EC5 connectors anywere,

I am new to the hobby, And want to use the EC5 as my standard, First gonna replace the deans on my trex-450 & 3S 20C 2200mah packs

Trying to work out a deal for a T-500, but might fall thru

anyway would just like to have EC5 connectors on everything so I don't have to worry about having a bunch of different connectors

Anyone know where I can find the female EC5's ? HH have the male/female in stock but no female only, figure I need more female connectors

Thanks

HobbyKing is converting all batteries to the new XT60 connector. This looks like a great connector and the price is right at HK. I just ordered a bunch to try them out. If I like them, I'll convert all my batteries.
