Default 13mm on 510 servo horns?

I currently use the 5245 servos on my 500. I am thinking of switching to the DS510 because I heard it works better with the 3G. But... the 3G setup says to put the ball on the servo horn at 13mm. I thought the 510 balls would bind on the case if they were set in that close.

I know there are a bunch of people flying 3G on 510's, what did you do to overcome this problem?

I believe I read that the 3G system creates a virtual cyclic ring that prevents binding in the corners. I have a set of 510s and a set of 5245's so I am very interested in the servo topic. I keep reading that 5245's are bad for 3g. I am hoping this is not true because I bought a set to upgrade my 510's. I really wanted metal gear servos and have loved my 65MG's on the Blade 400 and the T-Rex 450SE.

I have run the 5245's on my 500 for a couple of years now and probably around 300 flights and I can tell you that I love them. Have not had to replace any gear sets or cases or anything on them (around 3 or 4 crashes). But that was all before I tried 3G. They didn't seem to be fast enough for the 3G system. And I had one bumpy landing with the 3G and it messed up the inside of one of the cases. So even though it was metal gears, it still managed to damage the servo.

A friend of mine with the 510's is testing the 3G in his 500 before I shell out the $$$ for new servos. If that works I will pretty much conclude that the 5245's are not good for 3G, but at this point it is just a thoery.

Are you running your 5245's at 6v? I believe the 3G for 500 calls for .11 and the 5245's at 6v are rated for .12

510's i just looked up and they are rated for .13 at 5v and .11 at 6v.

Yes, 6V. Which was another question. Using the built in BEC, if the system was to get too loaded down and the voltage dropped to something like 5V then everything would continue to work, but at 5V the speed is something like .15 (just going from memory) and that is way slower than it likes. So another option was to add an external BEC and see if that helped. I needed a break from it all, so I put the flybar on and now the heli is a joy to fly again. Later in the season if I start getting board and want to play, I will mess with it some more.
