At work never been able to tune out the mechanical problems on the electronic side. In this case for HH mode I'm just convinced that the proper mechanical setup means the throw limits are set properly, that's all

Interestingly, I have literally just taken delivery (about an hour ago) of a Tarot ZXY 3 axis gyro in preparation for installing a 4 bladed head on my 500.
I have only scanned through the instructions briefly and I am pretty confuzzled in general (Chinglish and my ignorance are not a great combo ), but I did see the part on setting the tail up mechanically. It says to set the tail with about 8 degs of positive pitch so that the tail naturally counters the torque from the rotors in its neutral position... (The Belt CP V1 manual says the same....but that is for setting up the cheapy Esky stock gyro which is NOT HH.... I never had a V2 and can't remember what the instructions for the Esky HH gyro, that I bought separately at one point, actually said...)

I've never had to trim a tail on a good gyro either, but I never fly rate mode. Don't think I ever trimmed any tail actually. It is fairly well described that in any modern gyro system, such as the one you just got, if you trim it from the radio you will screw it up. I'll bet you anything that after you have read the manual, you will find that it says you must have no trim or sub-trim in the radio, and if you do have an issue with cyclic tilt, or pull off in a climb etc, it will have a step in the controller itself to put that right.
You just entered a whole new world, lol, where all your axis are controlled by gyros. You're going to have lots of fun. Cheers Sutty

What, so no one has had to move a gyro up and down a boom to stop some drift? I understand that from an electronic point of view, that doesn't change the centre point of the servo, but you are still changing the amount of pitch on the tail....
Re:- the Tarot, yup, it does say to set all sub-trims to zero etc and indeed, all sub-trims on mine are set to zero when I set them up. Then just a click or two of rudder trim in flight. I find that can vary from battery to battery - but as we have already said, I am in rate mode and slightly differetn torque from the head can induce a but of drift.... I plan to fly the ZYX in rate on the tail, but it do it's absolute thing on the other 2 axis

This is how it always works for my tail set-up. Is that servo arm at 90, not quite, I'll twizz it round a bit to see if one of the other arms is nearer 90. Maybe, not so great, but it is near enough. Is the slider arm square, nope, pushrod needs to be shorter. Wind it in a few turns. Is it square now, yep, it's near enough. Set the end points. Try it on the ground at full throw, yep right stick gives more throw, left stick gives the opposite, no binding. Sharp tail swing to the right gives more pitch, cool off we go. Take off, and never look back, it always works, and does not drift. Left and right piro rates match, and the stops are crisp and equal. Now with the MB there are some other optimising steps, but with all other gyros I have never done anything else. Now ask me if they hold in rate mode with this type of slip shod approach to my mechanical set-up, and the answer is no. How do I know, because, I always leave rate mode selected for throttle hold, and when I flick throttle hold on for a small auto landing, guess what, the tail always drifts as I auto in, and I usually have to put in some significant stick to stop it. As for the scale appearance argument, and as to why people fly in rate mode to begin with. I can see the appeal, but why not learn to make the tail follow you in a turn with stick input anyway, I think it would serve you well in the future in terms of control, for other types of flight. I think, when I fly big circuits, instead of my poor efforts at 3D, I think I make my tail 'look' scale anyway. Maybe it isn't near enough for a scale flier, not sure, but I always think it does follow the nose. Dunno, not sure, you've probably seen some of my videos Luke, what do you think, do I follow the nose? Anyway, doesn't matter, I'm in danger of opening up a whole other can of worms as to the relative merits of each mode, and for a fact I can see why rate mode would be easier to make it look scale, and there is no doubt you have to use HH for 3D, so let's not go there. Cheers Sutty
