Anybody know what quality the bolts are that are supplied with the KDE tail kit? They look just the same as the Align kit bolts, just 12mm long.

12-9 Steel as noted in the specs. I looked it up when I saw this as it was "freaking me out". Other thing is the KDE Bearing in the Tail Grip removes some of the lateral play which can only help with any shear issues.

The additional bearing in the grips are a must. Tested my 700 with the KDE bearings int he grips this weekend and the tail feels more locked. I also got rid of the tiny wag I had.

I bought the tail upgrade and plan to install it. The post about the 700E tail explosion freaked me out to the max!

Same thing with my 500. Now after reading these posts, I'm afraid for my 500's tail exploding too - hopefully the KDE tail kit will solve that.

My 500 tail did exploded but it was due to the bolt backing out and not shearing off. The force of the explosion took the whole tail assembly clean off with the TT stick out.

the grub screw on my 700E's tail shaft came loose and i lost tail control. i auto rotated and landed and found that the end of the grub screw was not going into the tail shaft as far as it should have. 30 seconds with a file and the problem is solved. i wonder if this could have caused this guy's failure?

That's what caused my first crash. Now I check that grub screw all the time.

My have we grown tolerant of Align's cost cutting measures. A few years ago there was a witch hunt when people found out lead was being ejected out of their 600 blades.
This problem today is no different with the exception that we have been conditioned to accept and buy: Bearings, bolts, tail assemblies, gears, one way bearings from third party resources. The torque wrench specification would surely save Align from a liability issue. I'm building 700N and I upgraded to a Kasama tail and will now upgrade the spindle bolts too. |

I replaced my 700 tail with the KDE upgrade I had bought for my 600 and never got around to using after reading this post. On my 600 now I just replaced the bolts with RTL Fasteners. I've tried checking their site but can't find any info on what RTL uses for material. Anyone know if these are better than the Align bolts?

Also with the KDE tail upgrade I had to shave a tiny bit off the end the tail blades because they where scrapping against the bolt head. Anyone else have to do this? I'm using the Edge 105mm tail blades.

I didn't have to shave any off w align blades. The kbdd blades definitely needed sone modification because the root sticks out quite a bit. I was planning to install some edge 115 tail blades but would prefer not to shave off a portion of them to make them fit.
How much did you need to shave off?

I read the Align blades are the only ones you don't have to shave.

Or you could get the UK quick tail hub..... so far I love it a lot better than my align/Ked upgraded tail...... plus with the kde arms this thing is really slop free almost as good as the head assembly. Plus I can now fold my tail blades (running RT 120mm) instead of having to leave them open as I didn’t want to shave any off.

I installed my 115 tail blades just now and there's plenty of clearance...even with the KDE radial bearing in the grips. Are you using a different bolt? I'm using the one that came with the KDE upgrade kit.
