2 months to the event. We are having some Spring like weather this weekend. So thought I would post a reminder about the event. Have solicited donations and looking forward to some great support from the heli hobby vendors and manufactuers. We are mid winter, and so far our winter here in Central Alabama has been OK. This weekend is first time we have had clear skies and sun shine since before Jan 1. Lots of rain, and temps have been yo yoing 60's to below freezing. This week we are going to be in the 60's. So I am sure the Birmingham Helicopter Field is seeing some helis and planes this weekend. Looking forward to seeing friends that have attended this event in the past, and making some new friends of people that this will be there first time. So make your plans and book your reservations if your staying in motel.

One month away till the event. Just a little chilly here today. But over the next 4 weeks we should be getting into our typical early Spring like weather pattern. For those that attended the event regularly in the past years. You all know just about any type weather is possible. I will say the last several years we have been blessed and weather has been good. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

24 days and counting.. Don't miss this event! Awesome pilots, great prizes, and fun times. There will be plenty of pilots to help with your project or to provide some new ideas for your next heli.

The Event is only 11 days away now. People will start arriving around Wednesday next week. Weather forecast is a little damp this week, but temps in the 70s. So that is a good sign. The 10 day forecast from today is looking good for mid week next week. So hopefully it carries on thru the week and weekend for the event.

It is finally here. The week of the Central Alabama Helicopter event. Weather is great Monday and Tuesday. Sun shining and temps in the high 70's will probably be in the 80's. Field is setup and waiting for the first pilot to arrive. Who will that be this year? Last year it was Robert Hughes from Nashville TN. He arrived on early Wednesday. The weather forecast for Wednseday and Thursday is 40 to 50% chance of rain. Temps in the mid 60's. Friday thru Sunday 20% to 30% chance of rain and temps in the mid 60's. That forecast could change over the next couple of days and in be sunny and in the 70's. For those that have been to the event before, they know the forecast this time of year is not always accurate.
Hope everyone that is coming to the event has safe travels. Those with RV's the parking area has been laid out, it is the same as past years. The red flags mark the area where RV's can park. Steve Bradley the land owner spread gravel from the road to about 100 feet inside the gate, so driving in and out will be easier. Trailers or RV's should not drag. Looking forward to seeing everyone. Hope everyone is ready to have a great time and do some flying. David Harkey Event Director. PS There is a couple pictures attached of the field after we finished laying it out for the event yesterday. |

Here is an update on the weather forecast. Going to have some rain at times. Appears it is going to be late evening and night when it happens. Here is James Spann forecast. He is local metrologist that good at forecasts. Weather has been great last several days. Temps are in mid 80s and blue skies. Was at the field Sunday and it was dry other than the west side corner out on the flight line next to the ditch. There was a little water standing there which is normal. But with temps and sun the last 3 days, it is probably dry now. RV parking area was dry and normal as years past.
http://www.alabamawx.com/?author=2 TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high between 67 and 70 degrees; rain will push into West Alabama by late afternoon, becoming widespread tomorrow night. The weather will stay cloudy and wet at times Thursday and Friday; periods of rain are likely both days with a high in the mid 60s. The rain won’t be continuous, and there is no threat of severe weather, and probably not much thunder. Just be ready for rain at any time on both days. THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The GFS continues to trend wetter. The 12Z GFS run hints that most of Saturday morning will be dry, but another surge of rain will arrive later Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. Rain could linger into Sunday morning, with dry conditions Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. The sky will be cloudy both days and we project highs in the upper 60s. Very hard to provide specific start/stop times for the rain at this point. |

Thursday Morning 8AM. About to head out to the field. There is already a couple RVs at the field. Tony Whiteside and Clint Akins arrived yesterday evening. Had a little rain during the night, but nothing major. Suppose to be scattered showers today. Friday and Saturday they are saying very scattered showers. If rain happens it will most likely be during night time hours. Here was a video that Raja took yesterday at the field. He arrived Tuesday and has been enjoying the great weather. Raja and Larry were the first official pilots to arrive for the event.
Here is video he took Tuesday

Great first day of event. 62 registered pilots at 5:30 PM. Was cloudy in the AM hours today and between noon and 3PM it drizzled rain for about 1 1/2 hours. But nothing major. Sun comes out around 3PM and has been great. Pilots flying at every station, Several top pilots in attendance, Bert K, Bobby W, Nick M., Big D. Tony W. As I write this, several are getting there night rigs ready to go. So should be a fun evening. Weather on Saturday looks to be great, and should get another 40-50 pilots on Saturday. Going to have some full scale fly bys, P 51 Mustang will make an appearance. So come on out an join us for some fun.

2015 Central Alabama Helicopter Fly In is in the books. It was a great event, we did have periods of light rain Friday and early evening Saturday. 94 pilots registered, first time in last 12 years we have had less than 100. But I can understand with the weather forecast that was being given eariler in the week why some people decided to not make the trip. But weather was OK, we had about 90 minutes of rain, Friday and it was not heavy. Sun came out around 3:30 and then around 6PM, it drizzled rain again for about an hour. Night flying took place Friday night. Saturday was good day, overcast, but temps were in low 70s warmest part of the day. Looking at radar, could see the rain moving in from West, and it was solid. So all the RVers packed up around 5PM and go ready to depart. All the RVs but one were out of there by 6PM. It started raining a little after 6PM, just a steady rain. It has rained that way all night and is raining on Sunday morning as I type this. So I doubt anyone is at the field.
But we all still had a great time. Event sponsors were very generous and every registered pilot got a couple nice items. There was a couple dozen $50 Gift Certificates to various vendors and companies. Several nice battery packs, couple of chargers. All the pilots were happy with the pilots door prize raffle. Flying at the event was great, didn't see many crashes, but the ditch did claim a few. Thanks to everyone that attending, Birmingham Helicopter Modelers really appreciate everyone that comes and supports the event and has fun. IT will happen again in March 2016, Looking at the calendar for March 2016, the third weekend is March 18th,19th, 20th, 2016. So that will be the weekend it takes place. Hope everyone has a safe trip home and thanks again for coming. David Harkey Event Director |
