TURNIGY MEGA 400W Lithium Polymer Battery Charger
Any thoughts on THIS charger?
I've just ordered one, so should be able to report my thoughts soon. I'm hoping that the balancing accuracy will be good, but if it's less than perfect I'll use my Cellpro 4S to get the balance spot on every few cycles using my current setup of one of THESE to charge as two 3S batteries. My concern is that the accuracy may be like that reported for the IMAX products compared to the similar models from Bantum. We shall see. Steve

They just added that product today. They sent emails to past customers about it last week.
Should be at least on par with the other Turnigy chargers which are worth their dollar value. Keep in mind that in order to take full advantag of the 400watt capability of the charger that the input power source has to be 15V or higher. You can buy a power supply that is at least 15V but if you paln on using it off a 12V battery ou tin the field you won't have the full 400w capability. |

There also the 'GT hobbies 20' charger which I believe is the same charger with different labeling as with a lot of Turnigy gear. Can be found online at the same price. The Turnigy one's will be on back order in no time.

No manual, but any Bantam manual is a good start!!! Not sure about the 10 battery memory. It seems to struggle to record details of LiPo's of differing cell count, but as I'll only use it for 6S, that's OK. Only downside is that it can pull more current than my old PSU is good for, so I've just nodded a PC supply to give me 300W of 12V to play with. :-) Steve

Oh dear.
It claims to be good for 20A into a 6S battery. I have some 3300mAh batteries rated at 2C charge, so I tried a 3.3A balance charge on one, which was OK, and then tried 6.6A on the other. About 20 minutes in and I was confronted with the following. I disconnected, power cycled and reconnected but got the same the moment I tried to start a balance charge. I checked the input voltage and got: Given that the charger supports input voltages of 11V-18V, this should be fine. I then tried a balance charge at the lowest possible current setting of 0.1A. The same. Wondering if the problem could be anything to do with the balance connection (although unlikely!) I tried a 0.1 basic charge. The charge started and I selected the input voltage monitoring display (only available during a charge). This reported an input voltage of 11.53V whereas the DVM still reported just over 12V. Moments later, the same message. Something clearly very wrong! Tried again, and as soon as I started the charge the charger beeped and reset itself, locking at the "welcome" display announcing it's identity. So back it will have to go. Not happy. Steve

It shows an input voltage error. What are you using to power it? I would guess that the voltage did indeed drop below 11V and cause the error. How are measuring the voltage with a DMM? The voltage the charger shows is likely fairly accurate. It includes things the DMM can not or may not be measuring like a voltage drop across the input leads, voltage drop under load, etc. Of course there is also the fact that you are using a cheap DMM and it could easily be off my .5V.
As such there are more variables that you are likely aware of. This is a very power charger and needs a very solid power supply to feed it. Try it on your car battery and see if that solves your problem.

As for the voltage measurement, I was measuring at the terminals of the power supplies used to feed the charger. And yes, it may not be the most expensive voltage measuring instrument, but I can assure you that it is plenty accurate enough for this measurement!!! I am very aware of the relevent factors thank you! You can't attribute that much voltage drop to supply wiring at such a low current or they'd have melted with a 20A charge. I think that two degrees in electronic engineering are evidence of my competence when it comes to reporting such failures. Your response makes me wonder if you have some commercial interest in the sucess of this charger. An "Oh dear, that's unfortunate. I'll not be buying one of those if they are that unreliable" response would seem more appropriate than casting doubt on my report of it failing! Steve

I'm not sure about consumer law in Hong Kong so I suspect I'll be entitled to nothing more than a replacement charger. Fingers crossed that the replacement doesn't do the same, although I suspect that the money I spent on return postage may be good money after bad. Steve

I sincerely hope all misunderstandings have been resolved, all emotions salved. I say that with selfish hopes of learning more about this charger (and its replacement) and HK's handling of a defective unit or model.
May we have updates as the situation progresses? Thank you

Well how much yo spend on the shipping for return the charger I have 1 new GT power 6-10
And when I charge for the second time at 8amp in my truck after 8minutes the charger stop charging I disconect the lipo and conect again and shows conection break I have in the past 1 acurel 6 and after few monts do the same but this one cost 80.00 shipped and only last for 2 charge when I try to send the post office tellme the cost is 43.00 dollars no way I just open the charger and realize that OMG this charger is rated at 10amp 200 watts. And only have 1 big capacitor 36v and 1 small 25v and the larger seem pretty deform I tryt to found an electronic technician to giveit a look I'm compare this charger with 1 tp 1010 clone I also have and the tp1010 clone have 6 25v capacitors and only do 150w at 10amp and this charger do the 10amp and I haveit around 2 years I don't recomend anymore Hk stuff I have burned bl motors esc almost every 3 esc I buy 1 not work the only good is the lipos but the last lipos I see are to costly if you add the cost plus the ship and almost no waranty I just buy me some good hyperions |

Why take the chance to save a few bucks? Check out the iChargers. They are not only better chargers but you can also buy them locally at ProgressiveRC and get great support.

Folks- I received my charger today and in light of a few "explosions / burnouts" others have had, I thought I'd open it to see if there were any obvious issues without touching anything to avoid warranty..
The case opend easily with a few screws and 2 leasd being removed to the display.. I found 1 MAJOR cause for concern that might hopefully be most likely the casue of the problems.. one of the heatsink screws touches the transformer/coil inside the unit. Now given the angle at which a particular unit happens to have theirs soldered in at would depend if the screwing action of the bolt may have pierced the insulation coating creating a possible short to the case. Not i tested ground to the case and it does not appear to be earthed to the negative - but there does appear to be some capacitance to the case from the board so can sill possibly be the source of the issue - anyway, I removed that screw and placed a small 2mm spacer under the head and screwed it back in, now it has clearance and not touching the coil winding.. In all fairness I'm currently charging a simple 3S 2200mah batt at the momentas my "first" test so only 2.2A pushing through it atm.. but working as I type this.. I'll attach some pics and i strongly suggest everyone check theirs before powering on even. If we are VERY LUCKY, and this is all the issue was, then it's an easy fix.. fingers crossed... PS: It has 2 small fans inbuilt that turn on once charging starts - they are not loud but not quiet either.. they are just ok..
