Default neXt with DX18 -- please help set up optimally

I like the simplicity of setting up the RealFlight 6/7 simulator using the RealFlight Interlink Elite controller. The setup instructions are very clear.

I am having trouble setting up the neXt simulator to work properly with the DX18 transmitter. I read ArchmageAU's Simulator Setup sticky, but I still do not understand how to setup neXt.

I have a few questions to get me started.

1) The neXt instructions talk about a "FMS compatible USB-dongle". What does FMS mean?

2) I understand that I cannot use the cable that came with the Phoenix sim. I am using the AeroFly 5/RC7 sim USB dongle. The neXt instructions state to use the "joystick mode". However, the "joystick mode" does not seem to work properly.

3) The instructions state to switch off undefined channels. How does one switch off the channels?

1. FMS was one of the first free simulators. It set the standard for computer-transmitter interfaces. Do a search for "FMS simulator cable". You can get them for around $6 on eBay, shipped from a US location.

2. The Aerofly cable referenced on neXt's webpage is an older one. Recent Aerofly dongles cannot be used in any way, shape, or form with neXt (or FMS or Heli-X or ...). Unfortunately I have one of the recent ones like you do.

3. You just uncheck the channels' On/Off button. Any channel that doesn't move in response to a transmitter control is a candidate for disabling.

1) OK. So my best guess is that FMS stands for Flight Motion Simulator. I believe this is the cable/adapter that you mean. I have a similar one from Hobby King that I've never used. Maybe I should give it a try.

2) I am able to use the AeroFly/RC7 dongle. I just want to figure out what DX18 and neXt settings I should use.

3) I clicked on the ratio buttons, but they do not uncheck.

In fact, that's the exact one I have. I bought it before I thought to check eBay. The HK one should work.

My Aerofly 5.7 dongle didn't work for me.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think disabled any channels either.
