Hm, looks like about the same distance as mine. too. cool. I know now I can mix color with that spacing.
and I see you are using the epoxy to fix the lipo as well, same here.

I am a little surprised your wires held up in the air so well. seems to be loose sitting there. I got mine all fixed by epoxy under the lipo (stripped the rubber coating). Let me know after a dozen flights and see how those wires held up.

last night's sesh makes a dozen flights and they are still good. key was to make the excess wire flow in the same direction of the centrifical force where it connects to the copper tape.

These are also much easier than the canopy. Here's the diagram:

Here's the button transformer:

Here's the EL wire:

And here's the soldered connector at the end:

Now, you don't really need the connector itself, but you do need the copper wire that they attach to the EL wire. It's almost impossible to solder it yourself, so just let them do it. When you get it, you can cut the connector off and just the the copper wire. For power, I just plugged the button transformers into channel 7 of my Spektrum. The button transformers are 3V, so the glow brightly on the the 5V coming out of the receiver.
I put the same exact setup on my helicopter with the EL wires. Both button transformers got hot a blew out after having on for 15 min. Stick with align Cold Wire if this is what you want to do.

What is the wavelength of the UV LEDs you are using? Most UV LEDs are near-UV (UVA) ones, with light output just above the normal visual spectrum, these are not harmful. The wavelength needs to be below 315nm (UVB) for there to be any problems. If you have something like this http://www.amazon.com/382-5-385-Ultr.../dp/B001GLSN92 these are fine without any special protection.

It is unlikely you have UVB leds as these are quite specialised and expensive. Most UV reactive paints work on UVA just fine in any case.
