Comment from KDE regarding motor temperatures
Here is a recent response which I received from the KDE owner regarding recent motor temperatures, that many have asked about.
Again, I hope that Richard does not mind if I copy this response of his here, hopefully, it will put people's minds at rest. It relates specifically to my use of the Cool Kosmik, but applies also to all other contexts I believe: Hey Andrew, Auto-Timing works exceptionally well with the KOSMIK series and this is the recommended setting for the new G3 motors, and typically, temperatures and nothing of concern on this. The entire motor is rated to over 400F, so no concerns of any damage from heat-generation. In actuality, when the motor is running in the flight, the centrifugal fan is efficient at keeping the motor cool and consistent, designed to run around 120F-140F during a flight as optimal performance. When you land and shut down the centrifugal fan, you’ll experience a motor that feels much hotter than during operation, simply due to the high-performance design of the motor. With high-performance motors, there is a high-copper concentration stored in the motor which naturally stores heat during flight. When the fan is shutdown, all the heat is expelled to the outer case and what you are feeling is the heat conducting to the Aluminum Fan, as it’s designed to do. In this, the temperature may feel hot, but this is normal for all high-performance motors and nothing of concern due to the quality of the components. If you are after purely efficiency and cooler-running temperatures, you can set this to a fixed timing of 5° in the KOSMIK programming. The power is limited at the top-end versus using the Auto-Timing algorithm, but it will raise the overall efficiency of the motor and reduce temperatures. It’s not needed and Auto-Timing is most optimal for best balanced performance, but you can also do this as an option if you would like. Hope this helps and thanks for supporting the KDE Direct brand! Thanks, Patrick Owner, KDE Direct Regards, Andy |

I have subsequently tested out the 7HV Ultimate with the KDE 700XF-455-G3 and Cool Kosmik 160A esc, and managed to get consistent motor temperatures of about 50 degree celcius! Very happy.
This is running 12S set-up with 13 tooth pinion to give 1100 to 1400 headspeeds, and flights up to and beyond 15 minutes on 75% of 5000mAh packs. Andy |
