Default Is my IrNet Programmer Box Toast ?

Oh Dear! What have I done ?

I attempted to do the blue backlight mod to my Irnet box and think I have cooked it.

I was going ok till it came to de-soldering the 16 pins that go to the LCD board.

As I don't have a solder wick or the necessary skills, I've ended up with the solder running amok across all the bottoms of the 16 pins.

Gave up, put the batteries back in and as you would expect..... TOAST !

Anyone think it may still be ok if I can de-solder it properly and fit the new LCD board
or have I indeed 'cooked' it ?

Any tips on advanced soldering for idiots also welcome !

Cheers,

Paul.

Before attempting something that will void your warranty. I might suggest you have at least the basic tools on hand before starting.
  • Desoldering Pump Spring Loaded Solder Sucker

Did you damage the programmer, possibly, but it can handle a bit of abuse.

I would suggest that you do some research before you go any further.

No worries, it's in the garbage bin.

I'll buy another and make do with the mono display.

Even with a dremel I had a hard time freeing the mainboard from those pins.

I think you'd need more than that solder pump.

WARNING TO ALL. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS MOD UNLESS YOU ARE AN ADVANCED SOLDERER/ ELECTRONICS ENGINEER !

By the way,

If you can manage to solder up this backlight mod correctly, it fits like a glove with no need for cutting or hacking anything (as was previously suggested) with the 2 halves of the case coming together with no gap.

When re-assembling, you need to be careful not to damage the button stalks as they are very fragile.

The casing does require some modification in order to get proper fit...

Especially if you upgrade the 4 buttons

Mine fit like a glove, no mods. Maybe I had a different backlight ?

Anyway, doesn't matter. History now.

New (Black & White) Irnet box in the post. Won't be trying that again.

Actually, I think anything that has a display should have a backlight these days.

Would add zip to the finished product cost I would imagine ?

The IrNet programming box is hard to read even in normal light.

I thought the batteries were going flat when I first used it as you could barely make out the text.
