Default iPod conversion

1 question on file size. After downloading, I convert all wmv files to .m4v through Quicktime on a Mac for use on an iPod. 99% work really well, but does anyone know why each file increases in size when they are converted?

Typical example:
872 x 480 pixels (Actual) 86.9 MB Data Size 159.88
436 x 240 pixels 90MB

Is this more to do with HD format than video compression settings?

Size of end video depends entirely on the encoding - frame size - frame rate and compression algorithm - wmv has one of the more efficient compression systems and so not surprising file goes up in other formats

Many thanks for your reply John.

This is a great reason to justify upgrading to a larger iPod. Who would believe the less efficient compression system would bring me such happiness?

Eh?

Some people are limited to dial-up because that's all they can get in their area. There are still places out in the sticks in the UK where DSL isn't available, and cable is out of reach for anyone living out of town. The best those folks can get is ISDN (128Kb/s). Doesn't stop 'em flying.

good suggestion, Bob has done this for some of his build videos...wish he did it for all.

but IMHO it really on takes a second to add a number in front of each file name when downloading....really isn't that bad!

Wow, this is kinda weird. How did I become the originator of this thread? It appears that the first few pages of posts went missing and mine was left on top. Oh well, my reprimand to myself still stands.

It was getting a bit off topic in the build thread so the 'how big is good enough' posts got moved here together with the self-flagellation bits

I would agree let everyone who has need of videos. Share there bandwith to give to others. Take a load off helifreak servers less money or put more money other places. Never know could fund an event...

Can have high res / mid res / low res

Torrents aren't just for films/games/music

Could even be done in packs ie Newbie pack 1 (how to open box and when too)
I would be happy to give back bandwith.

And honestly who would even try stealing video from here and try and put it out as there own. Not been to a forum where helifreak ain't the place for setup video. And costs too host them.

Well if helifreaks don't pay for there bandwith ...i'll take in HiDef only joking.
All torrents do is spread the load. So could be downloaded in any format wanted.
All helifreak does is hold torrents and files to get it running. Don't know that much

Just did a dl/ul test: I get 85Mb/s down, and .48Mp/s upload. I'm on Shaw cable, the nations other major cable network.

I'm cool with anything really. Over a gig would be fine, but ideally less would be cool. I like quality.

Im not fussed about the size, but as mentioned above, higher quality is what I would prefer. I like the idea of high and standard quality videos.
