stupid noob scale question
I have extensive experience with airplanes, but only flew heli's for about a year, just to the point of basic hovering skills and that's about it. That was 15 years ago
I'm considering picking up a t-rex 600 electric. I want something big, and something electric. But I'm not really interested in 3D flight. I save the stunts for airplanes. I'm looking for a framework to do something scale. Finally to the question. What can I do to make a heli like the t-rex more scale like in flight? Is it just a matter of "slowing" things down and limiting control throws? Or is there more I can do? And part 2. Is all the above a really stupid idea? TIA, |

Part 2 first. NO! If you enjoy it its not stupid.
Part 1, yes, heavier paddles, softer dampeners, a lower head speed, and more conservative throws, and you can make it a very docile machine. You can even throw a scale body on there! Some of the Thunder Tiger bodies fit without too much hacking and Century has quite a few. |

True that, but it doesn't mean it's a good idea, or that there isn't a better way to go.

Align is comming out with their own fuses for the trex 600. Looks like they are being supplied by Century/Funky. check www.rchover.com looks like they have some in stock. BTW- Lots of people have used the 600 for a sport scale ship it is a good platform. On another scale forum I have seen lots of them, usually some form of MD500/Airwolf because of the high tail boom of the trex. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. I am waiting for heliaritist to release their fuses for the trex 500 so I can stuff my bird in there since 3D is also not for me.

The 600E is a great fit in the Funkey Fuselage! The Align fuses are Funkey as well. I went with the unpainted 500E version since I wanted mt own paint job. Getting ready to pull it apart and paint it next week.

Very cool guys. Maybe it isn't such a far fetched idea after all.
It seems like maybe I could save a whole bunch of money going a little smaller though? |

I am in the process of converting my 600e into scale right now. A friend had installed his 600e into the Thunder Tiger Ecureuil. He said it was a pretty easy install. Well, it looked and flew so nice I bought one. This is my first scale attempt and it is turning out very nice. I bought the eMultigov to help me slow down the headspeed and installed the softer grey dampners. Hopefully it will be done in another week. I am taking my time.

I kept thinking I should take some pictures as I was building but never did. Well here is one when it arrived and some I took tonight. The kit itself was cheap - under three hundred. But I decided to add a speaker for the Aerosound RC system so I could simulate a turbine helicopter (another $300), The picture of the front shows where I plan on cutting a whole for the speaker. It also shows the separate battery to power the sound system. I also upgraded the receiver battery to 1900 mahs so it could power the eMultigov (another $100) and Nav lights ($?). The project would of been very cheap had I not got carried away. But then again ....why not!!!

Hopefully you guys trying to use Thunder Tiger bodies on Align mechanics won't have the same problem a guy at our field had. The underslung flybar on his T600E came very close to hitting the top of his Century Hughes-500 body. He was afraid the flybar would hit his body doing anything more than just level hovering. He ended up having to put on a Raptor (overslung) head.

Hey Brent,
My friend told me the Thunder Tiger Ecureuil was an easy install for the Align 600e. That is one reason why I chose it. He said it would be a good one for my first scale. He has also done the ALign 600e in the Century 500 body. That he said is not an easy job. One of the reasons being that you do have to switch the head over to a Raptor head.

Thanks for the input everybody. Had my maiden flight with my new Trexx 450 today. Wife isn't the greatest cameraman, she managed to pan away every time I did anything more than a basic hover, but I'm just amazed at how well that little thing flies even in gusty conditions.
Thanks for all the help everyone that posts here! Last edited by saltyzoo; 05-19-2008 at 07:32 AM.. |
