700 vs 800
How does the 700 vs 800 difference feel in flight? besides the 800 probably being quite a bit slower?

Both helis have essentially the same rotor and t/r control systems, and same drive systems. So when it comes to how "nice" they fly, they both do.
The 800 has plenty of cyclic authority for its size, but due its size and weight as compared to the 700 (even though the 800 runs on more voltage, a larger motor and disc), the 800 is still slower in collective response than the 700 with the stock power system on-board. It's no slouch by 800 class standards, but still not as quick off a collective stop as the 700. However, I have flown an 800 with a Scorp 4540 installed with different gearing and the head speed bumped-up, and it was pretty awesome I've got to say. Not too far off the 700 in collective response. But the motor is prohibitively expensive, and you can't routine get them anyways. Anyways, both helis do exactly what you ask them to do with the sticks, (and part of that "feel" they both share is frankly the V-Bar working in harmony with their control systems), and they both fly true with no bad habits. The 800 autos better, the 700's quicker in collective, both have great cyclic response and "feel", the 800's easier to see and orient due to its size, the 700 costs less initially, parts costs between the two are roughly the same...I don't know...pick one Kyle D. |

I will be installing a hand wound Pyro 800 (Wound up around 414KV) on the XXtreme that should produce MASSIVE power. I will also be sending the Scorp that came with the XX out to be hand wound and from what I have been told that motor will produce an INSANE amount of power (Going to send the YGE ESC out and have it converted to 16S as well) So I would have the motor and batteries to hopefully run a much higher headspeed effeciantly. With the 17-19 tooth pinion now available I would be able to gear the Heli to have a a head speed well over 2000 What would you consider a safe head speed for the XXtreme?? The Manual says 2200 RPM. How fast HAVE you flown with the 813s on it??

@ jtjohn1,
Sorry for the delayed response. I don't always get to all the forum entries every day. Q: "What would you consider a safe head speed for the XXtreme?? The Manual says 2200 RPM. How fast HAVE you flown with the 813s on it?" A: The max stated in the manual is 1800, but of course that is there for liability purposes. The machine is built to handle much more, but as always, although the mechanics can handle more power pumped through it, flight times get short, and at some point, the electronics will start to complain. In the reference above about flying the machine with a 4540, that set-up was @ 2150, and the machine is owned by someone else. Although a very unique and powerful set-up, it's not what I would call an everyday flyer and practice machine, as flight times are too short, motor's too expensive etc., but the machine's mechanics handle it without complaint. However, if you really punish the machine at these high head speeds (like pull-outs from terminal velocity vertical dives that over-drive the head speeds), you'll bend blade bolts on a regular basis. While prototyping the machine and playing with possible power system set-ups back in early 2011, we had some 21and 22 tooth pinions provided to us by Mikado, and we proved the machine would not blow-up at 2200 for at least a flight or two . After that, you're on your own. Remember, you're swinging 813's, and they're a HEAVY blade as compared to a standard 693mm "700 class" blade. Kyle D. |
