I love having my bro with me for that reason! He lets me know when a car enters the park, " we go flying around 6:45 am" so usually joggers only, but every now and again ya get that guy who doesn't understand that by walking up on ya and shouting, " Hey man that's cool, is it electric, how long does it last, man it's out there a ways! That it freaks me out,. I just wanna say shut up till I land! I need to join a good air field club.. But I do stress insurance. I will be getting insured by months end! Again, nice thread!

Great thread and video, man. I'm pretty new to the world of helis, and I've definitely been reading as much as I can about safety. These things (especially the electrics, with their instant torque), can be dangerous if you get careless and I'd rather not injure myself or anyone else while out enjoying my hobby. One of the first things I did was to join the AMA, and I'm soon to also join the local club as well.
I prefer to think of them as pet rattlesnakes - perfectly safe if you take the correct precautions, but get careless or complacent and you're going to get bitten.

lipo safety question
whoanelly,
thank you very much for your safety vid and very valuable advise. i've got a newbie ... question reg. volatile lipo batteries. in your safety vid you mention lipo batteries could quote 'burn down a house' so would it be safer to keep them uncharged when one is not at home ...? at the moment i store the lipos in a box in the dog kennel ... the doggie lives in the house anyway ... so far i've only had one mcpx battery bulging ... thank you. |

I store mine in the garage just in a normal tool pouch, but none of these are puffed so i feel safe with them.i think the main reason guys burn thier house down is leaving batterys unatended while charging.if u have a battery that stays puffed after a flight and doesnt go down then dispose of and dont bring home.if u notice one puffed at home id take it outside away from your house until u can get rid of it.ive never seen one go up in flames after the swelling went down, good luck to you.

After watching YouTube videos of beginner pilots graduating to these flying law mowers at city parks with wild abandon while folks, dogs, kids and unsuspecting crowds gathering and all the while the pilot is two stick jerks from plowing into someone.
Scares the crap out of me to think just how lucky they are, at times. |

After installing the battery on the 450 prepping for my first flight, it wouldn't spool up. Long story short, I had the lipo battery brushed up against the motor that was causing it to drag/hesitate.
Here's a near miss I had with my Blade 450 (Battery could have caught fire if this persisted): [ame]http://youtu.be/YoWQsul8EEI[/ame]

AMA
I think you must fly at a AMA dedicated site and join there club in order to get the insurance. Even then it is secondary to all other insurance policies that you may have including your home owners and auto insurance. If you fly at a dedicated field and like the club scene then it is fine, if you dont then you better be extra safe! I fly at a local baseball field however if even one person is there outside my family, I do not fly. If anyone comes up, I land immediately and do not fly again until all is clear. I hate the club scene and just cant do it, plus I dont like 20 people watching me fly, it makes me nervous. Flown airplanes since 1994 without a single incident, I do know it only takes one however. I am new to helis and being extra safe in this new endevor. I will quite the hobby before I do the club scene again, it is just not for me for many different reasons that would require a thread all its own.
