PowerLab Android app beta request
Hello all, I've written an app that allows remote monitoring PowerLab charging state over Wi-Fi, and wondered if any early adopters might be willing to give it a go. I'd like to put it up on Google Play for everyone if there are no major issues found.
It requires a newer Android device with USB host support (i.e running ICS or JellyBean), and a USB plug capable if plugging into the PowerLab USB. I've tested it on an Asus Transformer, Google Nexus 10.1 using the USB adapter, and a rooted MK808B android stick (see pic). This last one is nice because it's only $44 on amazon, and has HDMI output for local monitoring on a TV as well. You would need two Android devices to monitor over Wi-Fi. I usually use the MK808B at the PowerLab, and then monitor it with my Nexus Tablet using Wi-Fi around the house. The MK808B didn't recognize PowerLab FTDI USB out of the box though, and required rooting (google "finless root MK808B" for simple instructions on how to do this). I'm wondering if other manufacturers devices have the same problem, and would make this app sort of worthless on Google Play. Please pm if interested, I'll send you a Google Play beta link to try it out. |

Hmm don't have any mini to micro usb cables or adapters. Else I'd give it a go right now with my phone.
I salute your efforts in making this possible. ... and can't help but notice the word "finless" in that rooting method

I've posted a beta version up on Google Play. Google requires that you users join a Google group before the download link works. Once joined you can click the beta link using the same Google user to access the Google Play beta version. Here's a public group I've created for testing...
rcgadgets group and here's the beta link to download the app: PowerLab Remote note: after it says "app will be downloaded", it doesn't seem to download until you open Google Play on the device itself. |

I must say that's pretty cool but is there any way of working it through Bluetooth instead of WiFi?

I thought about Bluetooth, but you would still need a Bluetooth device to connect to that know how to talk to the ftdi chip (i.e. another Android device?) And the range on Bluetooth is pretty short (would work around the whole house). Probably easy to bolt up to Bluetooth though if someone know of a dongle that can talk to the powerlabs.

Re: PowerLab Android app beta request
Would that happen to be the same crius module used for the ikon?

BTW, I'm not sure why this thread was moved under manufacturers. I'm not selling it, just giving away a free app I developed for the community as a hobby (my other hobby being Android).
The hope was to get some testing and post on Google, but it doesn't appear there is enough interest to do so. If anyone still wants the app, pm me and i'll be happy to send you a copy. |
