Silcon Nano Tube Lithium batteries
http://phys.org/news/2012-05-nanostr...batteries.html
up to 5x the capacity of what we have now and that is the conservative estment and there working out scaling this in to production in the next few years image E power heli that could ether fly longer then nitro O.O or have packs 1/5 the size even you take a little of each your looking at micros with 10min flight times also these could be good for 6000 cycles

Wow thats good stuff. Maybe 15 to 20 minute flight times arent far off.

I'd settle for 7 minutes at the most myself. Any more and I want to land and take a breather. And the weight I save will make the heli a demon, so I will need it!

they keep mentioning lithium ion but dont we use lithium polymer? Is it basically the same deal? if it works in one should that mean it works for the other?

I thought li-ion was for high capacity for its weight(ie:cell phones/laptops), and li-po was for current output?(ie: power hungry R/C). Simplified of course, but the points are there.

Li-ion is what the F1 cars use in their KERS system (unless the info guys got it wrong). Makes me wonder, as surely if anyone is after light weight and power, it's the F1 guys who spend 500 million every year on development (that's 500M for each of the top teams!).

Lipos are a type of Li-ion

Really? I always thought they where different? I learn't something today then. Makes the F1 choice make more sense now!

Wow! This is actually very exciting!!!
I've been watching all the theoretical scientific announcements about new battery tech and how amazing it will all be for years, but this company has actually been around for 4 years trying to get this ready for production and they actually have a short term goal to get a production out with twice the current LiPO energy density. It may be another 5-10 years to reach that 5x energy density, but if they can come out with something having 6,000 cycles and double the energy density of LiPO, they will have a best seller!

As far as the Li Ion vs Li Po there used to be a difference in chemistry (LiIon used to be 4.1V charged) but now they are almost identical, the only real difference is the form factor (Li Ion labelled cells are round).
This tech would apply equally to both, and there is no reason we couldnt use round cells if they are 1/5th the weight/Wh of current LiPo.

Li-pos are 4.2 charged so 4.1 isnt far off to start with
