I've been looking also and all I've found are the ones from Curtis Youngblood. When I saw the 30.00 ea. price I didn't even bother to try to find out if they will work with Align or not.

Glad you posted this. Maybe someone out there can source these for us.

Has anyone found any reasonably priced 13 or 14 tooth helical pinions for the 500 pro yet?

stock pinion (12T ?) gives me 3100+ - I'm thinking of stepping down a size. I like the way it flies even at 2700 RPM. Setting it at a max of 2900 would be just fine for me and maybe give me an extra minute on the pack (?)

I sent out an email to curtis youngblood to find out if the 13t will work. In the meantime I have also sent out a few emails to different companies about the cost to machine a 13t helical pinion, is anyone interested.

While cost is a topic of finding a 13t pinion, what is the cost to convert over to straight gears to get a proper setup for a governor?

Assuming you have an ESC with a decent governor (and to me the stock Align doesn't cut it in terms of the gov ability) all you need is the 162 main gear and a 17 tooth pinion. I got a 2 pack of gears and the pinion from for right around $20 shipped from Readyheli.

I'm using a CC 75, and it governs very nicely at 3000. I can get a bit over 3100 governed on that setup, but 3000 seems to work better for me.

Forgot to mention, I think there are a couple of folks here using the 16 tooth pinion, but I haven't tried it yet, been happy with the 17.

I tried 17T pinion but it was cooking a couple of my older packs.

I'm getting good results with 16T pinion governed at 2700/2800 rpm

Just so I am clear about converting to straight cut gears

Pinion

Main Gear

Putting it in my cart comes to $16.98 + whatever shipping comes to

I have a CC Ice 75 in my bird now so I would like to take advantage of the governor.

The 17 does seem a bit harder on the packs, they come down a little on the hot side. The Thunder Power pack is handling it better than my Turnigys.

I'm planning on trying the 16 the next time I make an order from RH. I'd rather go with a smaller pinion, provided I like the results with the lower head speed.

I started thinking how will these gears compare to the slant cut ratio? Performance wise I think it will be harder to strip a helical gear but I've never had problems stripping straight gears in the air.

So I decided to crunch some numbers, stop me if I'm wrong in any of this.

Planning to govern at 3k

Motor kv * voltage (1600*22.2) = motor rpm (35,520)

Stock ratio: 134/12 = 11.16
35,520/11.16= ~3182
Gives 6% headroom

Straight cut swap:
162/16= 10.125
35,520/10.125 = ~3508 rpm
Gives about 15% headroom above stock head speed

If I could find a 13t pinion
134/13 = 10.30
35,520/10.30 = ~3448rpm
Gives about 15% headroom above stock head speed

If I could find a 14t pinion
134/14 = 9.57
35520/9.57= ~3711
Gives about 23% headroom above stock head speed

A 13t helical or the straight cut swap give about the same headroom. Looked around and was able to get everything from ronlund.com for $14.94 + shipping, came out to under $20 so I figured I might as well try it. Once a 14t pinion comes out i'll get one and bring out my spares from hibernation.

35,520/12.08= ~2940 rpm
Gives zero head room for governor
...
Stock main gear is 134T not 145T

Need a little advice...

Trying to install a 16t pinion on the 500mx motor, if I line up the notch on the motor shaft with the set screw on the pinion it rides too low. What did you guys do?

I gound the flat spot a little higher with a dremel
You need bag the motor and poke the shaft through the plastic and seal the hole with tape.
This will make sure no steel fillings get into the motor magnets.

Got the pinion installed and main gear.

Need a little advice setting up the governor. Can someone post some decent starting values for the ice governor. Governor gain, head speed change etc. I also don't understand the three boxes for setting up the governor rpm.

So I'm no 3D pro... From the math above if I go under 2940RPM I start to get headroom. How much do I need? With a lower RPM what bad effects does it have that people are talking about other then lower power?

If you go below about 2800 the tail won't hold.
