New fpv camera mount - Would you buy this?
I've made a simple camera mount for a 450 heli with a tilt servo. It's basically this design but aluminuim:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...5FSize%5F.html I tried that HobbyKing fibre glass version and had really bad vibrations. Glass fiber wasn't stiff enough. Mounting the camera fixed to the frame would work but the challange here is having the tilt machanism (no need for pan). So i made an aluminium replacement for this mount (images attached) 1.2mm think. It worked and 90% vibs have gone! This is great because guys doing fpv on 450 helis have always hit this problem when attempting a tilt on the camera then just give up and have the camera fixed. There are other factors that effect vibrations on helis but at least this mount i just did is doing a great job in the two flights I had so far. |

So I went ahead and designed a new aluminium mount.
Fixing the mount to the frame is very simple. I use string. Not sure what it's made of but it's the type that has zero elasticity and very strong. Not plastic. This is very ideal because it's simple, light, easy to change, very strong, no need for another supporting bracket to hold the mount (less weight), and best of all, no need to drill into carbon fibre! Drilling/cutting/sanding carbon fibre isn't appealing as you can imagine with all the health hazards and the difficulty in achieving accurate holes is a challenge in itself. Plus guys don't want to be modifying (and possibly ruining) their expensive frames incase they want to remove the mount later. Adding small "U" shaped notches on the edges of the top plate for the string to catch on should be good too. The other benefit about this design is it's universal to all helicopters per size (eg. not just trex models). So you could have a mount for each size - 450, 500, 550, 600 etc... Only difference is the width of the mount. I'll hopefully upload a video of an fpv flight with this mount that includes tilting. Last edited by hga77; 06-18-2012 at 08:33 PM.. |

To all helicopter FPV lovers. If you want to stick an fpv camera to your heli the proper way with full tilting and low vibrations, then you might be interested in this.
Will work with most helicopters from 250 to 800 size. Really simple design based on the fibre glass pan/tilt kit. No fancy gimble functions here. Just a quality solid fixture for your camera with tilting. Who needs panning, just use your rudder for that Just wanted to give a heads up incase anyone is interested. |
