I was so excited when I finally 'stirred' my first piro-funnel tonight. I've been flying them (horribly) since I learned all my funnels about 2/3 months ago. I've been able to 'bump' them around for a while, but after two weeks of solid work I got a few going tonight with a proper piro-stir. Stirring is not quite 100% apparent in the video, but this is a moment for me. True 3D flying!

Here is a current progress video. It has now been 18 months since I did my first Piro-funnels and video (above). My memory of that video was that I was flying piro funnels, but now looking back I see they are shallow, shaky, and obviously un-practiced compared to how I want to fly them.

Now 18 months later I have learned a lot of new maneuvers (most of which you'll see in the following video), and I've consistently been working on my pirofunnels. It is truly amazing how much time it takes to really control such a complex movement. I've come a LONG way, but still feel like practice is warranted (especially in real life, where there is a lot more instability overall, inconsistency in the tail, wind, and nerves).

I was fairly happy with my progress until someone recorded this last week. It just looks so slow and ugh, I really need to pick it up a gear.
I'm thinking up the piro rate, up the head speed and make the cyclic a bit snappier. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Looks pretty good to me, but room to improve if you want. (I like your rolling loop)

To me accuracy and smoothness is more important than the "pop" and "wow" factor.

Hard to get a feel for accuracy unless video shows ground in view. Don't take this as "you need to fly lower" but as "video cannot capture that sort of progress well".

Your transitions between moves seem OK, but can definitely improve. Hard to tell what is a defined manoeuvre and what is a transition.

The biggest thing is manoeuvre definition. Show what you are doing as opposed to seemingly random flight.

Take a tip from the Circqe du Soliel play book "Do something that you make look easy that people know is hard. Then do the same but take it up notch. Then do the same but take it up another notch." Eg. loop, 360 stall, backward loop, 360 stall, forward rolling loop, 360 stall, backward rolling loop, 360 stall, piro loop to piro flip (without slowing the piro).

Thanks for that, it makes sense. They were all supposed to be defined manoeuvres, a couple of them failed and I started again/bailed. I'm no good at transitions, so I tend just to fly set manoeuvres.
The play book idea sounds good, thanks for the help.

That was some very impressive flying richardv! You have great control! Your skill foundation looks super solid, you're reversing easily, you have good altitude control, your rolling flipping circle was cool, as was the rolling loop...

Much appreciated Trexwilly. As I said, I was pretty shocked at the difference between how I thought I was flying and what it looks like on video, and am looking for honest advice.

As you say, the skills are solid, but I thought it looked slow and saggy, it needs some snap, fewer mistakes and lower. I think it also needs more flying around, using up a bit more sky.

Some of that will come with practice, but in the meantime I've increased the piro rate by 20% and upped the headspeed to 2200. I also want to make it snappier around centre so I'll increase the paddle sim this weekend and maybe try 2300 on the head.

Well your video looked like you were drilling moves! And that is something many of us need to do more of!

Yes it did not look like a routine, but that comes with time, keep doing what your doing, getting comfortable, without scaring your self. Lower... harder... faster... comes on it's own, and with your basics drilled to perfection, your flying will be amazing!

Thanks Trexwilly. Since turning the headspeed and piro rate up last week, I've realised why I was doing everything high. With a low headspeed the heli wouldn't react the same when pushed, there's a delay on severe collective changes and bailing out was a bit dodgy as the heli doesn't react quick enough. I put up with it because of the 6 minute flight times, but the video showed me how it was letting me down.
The flight time has dropped to 5:30 with 2,200, but I had some really good flights over the weekend and I feel a lot better about my flying. Thanks for the kind words, they genuinely helped me through a low spot.

I just rewatched the Jamie Robertson tomahawk video and I think you might be right. Paint stirrers are stationary, travelling would be a tomahawk.

Although tomahawks are already tictocking, so maybe tail-down tomahawk circuit?
