Default Phantom 2 flies slightly sidways, why?

Hi People,

I've been flying my Phantom 2 for some time now and have been really enjoying this little quad... For some time now the quad has been flying slightly sideways, and I'm not sure why? Always to the same side, right side of the aircraft slightly forward and left side slight back...

I have tried re-calibrating time and time again but it does not seem to help. What else should I be trying?

Thanks!

Hi All,

Just for your information, I replaced one of the older landing gear legs a few weeks ago because I fitted a data link...
While messing around with my compass settings this evening I realized that my quad was not standing perfectly level on the table (one side was +-8mm higher than the other side when measuring at the motors). I then measured the landing legs and then to my amazement noticed that the upgrade leg was 5mm longer than the standard ones. The quad was probably calibrated like this and hopefully the cause of the side drift...? Compass readings and gyro readings where good in spite of her leaning to one side. When I levelled her all the gyro settings where out...

Tomorrow ill re-fit the standard 120mm high gear to and remove the taller 125mm gear, then do a recalibration....

I hope this fixes her?

Ill post my findings.

When you "calibrate" don't you do it while holding it in your hands? I'm talking about the compass calibration, which may affect how it may fly, straight or crooked...

Hi People, I'm just sharing my findings. One landing leg was 5 -8 mm longer than the other, and if calibrated like this, the Phantom flies slightly sideways. I installed even length gear and re calibrated the sensor and she flies like new.

Thanks!

Which calibration are you doing that the leg length is affecting?

Hi,

The IMU Gyroscopic calibration was affected, done under the tools menu via the PT2 assist software. I also noticed a much better, more stable hover with much less drift since the fix.

Happy flying,

Do you also do a compass calibration?

Hi, sorry for the late response, I did have repeated compass calibration issues but since I recalibrated the IMU and with the correct leg length many of these issues have also disappeared.

I fly mainly in the bush so often had no choice but to take-off from my vehicle roof, but this too I have had to stop as metal seriously affected my compass... I do still land on my vehicle roof but prefer to stay away from metal during power up and launch...

happy flying!
