Yes, that would do the job. It would have been rather poor of me to not let you know that buying such a large ESC would have been have been money not well spent. The Heli-Baby is small by nature and that ESC would have almost been larger than the motor. Even the 85A ESC I am planning might be too large so I have a second backup ESC on hand just to be on the safe side. Remember that the pilot is actually part of the balance so a trip to a local store for something to put in there is in order. Of course, a weight can be added, too, but the heli will fly without pilot as shown in the video. Enjoy it, I am going to have a blast with mine, especially when I get the floats added. Take care.

I should have asked this before I paid for it lol But does it come with blades??
If not what kind did the one that was at the fly in have??

Anyone know if the MKS servos out of my D550 will fit?

Thank you

It does take standard size servos but I am not sure about the blades. It does work well with Switch Blade 473's on it as those were the blades in the flight video shot at IRCHA. I am dropping Spektrum 6040's in mine. Hope this helps.

So the Heli Baby takes standard servos? But the D550 uses mini servos.... Seems like the Heli Baby would be fine on minis also, especially if it's only running 473 blades...

Edit: I see peak aircraft site does say standard servos. Hmm. Well nothing wrong with that I guess, but I suppose adapters would be needed for the MkS out of the D550. Probably cheaper to just get some decent standard servos.

Man this heli looks cool. I never had any interest in anything scale-ish till now.

yeah its meant for low cost standard size servos you dont need anything fast. you could probably make adapters but it would prob be cheaper to buy a set of cheaper standard digital servos.

I'm glad it uses standard size servos. I've never considered a scale like machine before, but I like this.

I am daily working on the machine. #2 has had the first flights, but we saw some points of improvement. There will be also an alternative motor that is one size bigger from length for more output. So there is then the choice between the historical engine power and a typical modern power output. And we will use 500 blades. The 480s are a bit small, especially the chord. Also I have added a slot in the rear canopy plate for mounting the FBL alternatively on the lower left frame. Pictures are coming soon

I see you have a guard posted to keep prying eyes and fingers away from the latest build. I can hardly wait for my kit. Take care.

Gerd,

I wish you would stop posting photos of the new HeliBaby and every time you do I seem to want one more...

Well, I got a chance to get the first prototype 40th Anniversary Edition HeliBaby today and I jumped at it. I was able to get it up in the air late this afternoon and I couldn't be happier with it. I still have lots to learn about the gyro system and it cost me a set of blades but it is now completely ready to fly. I will set it up with floats once I get back home and will also set it for water bucket work. I will try and get a pilot figure in it before I get home but it is not a must have. I hope to get any small niggles worked out tomorrow. I put a set of 503mm blades on in place of the 473's that were ruined and the performance was very strong. Even the prototype quality is very, very high. This is also the first DFC design that I have tried and I really like the way that only one link is solid leaving the other link to be flexible and not put any binding action on each other. I have been waiting a very long time to fly this helicopter and I have not been disappointed. Thanks to Gerd for bring it back, thanks to Chuck for the chance to buy it, and thanks to Dan for making it available to me. Take care.

Here are a few pictures of the helicopter as it sits now. While doing some reworking of the servos and setting up the gyro, I forgot to install the screws that hold on the arms. While in a very large, high altitude loop, the elevator arm came off and the helicopter pancaked into the ground. The canopy exploded, the gear was bent, and the boom was struck by the blade.

The design is very robust and after a few hours of work at the flying club, I put it back up in the air. The balance was ok with the canopy but the first flights were without the pilot. Now, I needed the pilot installed to get the balance correct. I flew it like I stole it and does it ever fly nice. The blades are a bit big for the motor and those will be changed as soon as possible so in the meantime, I increased the rotor rpm as I am not running it at full speed yet.

I should have the replacement parts in less than two weeks at the Port St. Lucie Fun-Fly. Take care.

Don

Thanks Danny. I look forward to the two of us being able to get our Baby's up in the air in PSL. I took some pictures at the beach as the light was much better than the hotel lights and flash. I'm like a kid in a candy shop getting this helicopter. Thanks.

A few pictures from the recent Port St Lucie Heli Smackdown. I have added the horizontal fin this morning and put some quickly printed up graphics on the boom and vertical fin. I'll take some pictures this weekend as it is really starting to look like the heli I owned 37 years ago. I can't wait for the floats and the second kit. Gerd, thanks so much for bringing it back.

When the prototype was sent to IRCHA, it was devoid of the instrument panel. I think it may have come off when the canopy was taken off and on during testing. It is a simple thing to make so I had some fun yesterday and built my own to go on the interior seat molding. I couldn't resist having some fun so I made up a set of keys and this afternoon, added the instrument faces from my Jet Ranger photos. The glue is setting now so I will get some pictures of the final installation a bit later so for now, here is the panel. Take care.
