Repairing the bearings in a 500L motor

Is it worth it. I think the risk of busting the case or ruining the motor is more than buying a new one when this one goes....MHO.

Well, if you do it successfully, it cost you about $2.48 in bearings. plus shipping of course.

Thanks Jarad for the vid on replacing the Stock 500L motor bearings. I struggled a little to find the Boca bearings to replace the stock ones so I thought I would put the link to the set here:

It is actually REALLY EASY to do with just a little care. If you can build a heli that flies, replacing the bearings is no problem with the clear instructions shown on the video in this thread. Thanks again Helifreakers

I want to try this but I don't know much about which bearing to choose. IE Boca has one of the 5x11x5 starting at a few dollars to one for $24 What is necessary for replacement bearings to be better than stock? I again don't know what is better for the heat, rpm etc

I'd suggest you get ceramic bearings from HeliDirect.com. I believe both sizes are available in ceramic and much cheaper than Boca.

I had a friend change mine and it runs much better than stock now I'm shocked.

Yup, Helidirect has the ceramic kit for about $10.

ok, ive had about 185 flights on my stock motor.

How do I tell if the bearings need replacing,can it go on much longer?

I'm spinning the motor pinion and it seems fine. The only notchy feeling is the magnets working.
Secondly, are the bearings a sealed type? ie they don't require any oil? I heard the scorpion bearings need oil after 10 flights????

If you take the motor out of the heli and spin it, it should be nice and smooth - go up to 75%. You may also hear a loud high pitch sqeal when you're flying. I'm pretty sure they aren't sealed.

Some motor/ESC combinations "squeal" louder than others and it is just a function of the electronic timing. I have had some brand new motors that were very loud even with perfect bearings in them.

I have heard Horizon Hobby will take care of you if you send it in. My thought exactly. I am personally not going to take my motor apart after 20 flights to fix a bad product I paid good money for. Mine squeals like a pig even before the first crash. It's fricking horrible. Everyone is having similar issues I know with the 500.

I have one crash on the bird. I am going to put a scorp in it then send this motor in. When I get it back, you will see it for sale in the classifieds.

In the process of replacing bearings-needed to lock the motor can.

A 450 main shaft fits in the slots in the can.

Use two 450 main shafts to fit the can to a vise-not too tight-you are only stopping it turning.

Use Jarred's way of turning the end cap.

I use Tri-Flow in the spray can along with supplied straw to oil the bearings. Shoot a liberal amount of Tri-Flow at the bearings and rotate the motor to work in oil. Do this every 4-6 flights. The bottom bearing is covered by a sticker- cut a hole to expose it. My stock motor has over 150 flights using this method.

guys please help.....
No matter what I try, the bottom of the motor wont come loose....
Whenever I clamp the motor mount and try undo the bottom...it comes loose at the top, where the pinion is, not at the bottom where it is supposed to.
Ive tried heating it up with a lighter and that didnt work.
I tried clamping the motor really hard with a vice grip but I worked out that doing that also clamps the inside of the motor (which is what Im trying to uncrew) so that method is impossible.

Right now, Ive got my soldering iron resting on the bottom of the motor so it can slowly heat up and hopefully melt the threadlock.

Please help me, I dont know what to do anymore....Im out of ideas
