First crash. Advice needed on new frame
Damn, just had my first crash on this heli after 18 months
The frame sides broke near the front and replacement frames are quite pricey at £40. Has anybody tried the thicker, cheaper Fusano 1.6mm frames - are they any good? There is also a Fusano, really cheap, fibreglass frame available - anyone have any experience with these? Thanks in advance Steve

I've never tried the fusuno carbon frames (haven't broken frames yet), but I wouldn't go for fiberglass frames, because fiberglass is not conductive, so you could get static issues if you don't ground the boom.
Agreed that the stock frames are pretty expensive, but it's also because they are real carbon fiber, not carbon fiber sandwiched with glass fiber like in the goblins (doesn't matter in the goblin design since the transmission goes on rigid alu plates). Dunno how the fusuno carbon is though, you'd probably have a hard time breaking the thicker 1.6mm frames, even if they are carbon fiber sandwiched with glass fiber.

I have the Fusuno frames, they're fine and quite a bit cheaper than the originals - you can still break 'em though
The GF Fusuno frames are only available in lurid colours which cheapen the look of the heli imho |

Well I decided on the thicker Fusano frames, then realised they were out of stock, so I've gone for the really cheap Fusano fibreglass frame in a dodgy colour
I'll have to work out how to ground the boom by the sounds of it - or just try it first to see if I have any problems. Gutted to crash as I wasn't even flying outside of my limits. Just lost orientation and couldn't recover in time. One of those fancy controllers with self rescue would have saved my heli, but I'm too tight to buy one I'll report back on my findings with the cheap frames for future reference...

What a bummer, that must have been a pretty hard hit? Are the frames completely busted? Maybe there is a chance of sandwiching pices of CF to broken areas with epoxy, although I typically reserve the ghetto repairs for the smaller birds.
Grounding should not be difficult for the GF frames, a wire from the boom to the motor mount is easy to do.

Yeah it came down hard on its nose, onto very short grass.
I did think about patching up the frames as they are only broken at the front and not supporting anything, but I think they are just a bit too damaged. The plastic bottom and top plates have also broken. Hopefully I'll be able to leave the servo and head blocks in place and just swap one side at a time, instead of doing almost a full strip down and re-build.

I read these heli were built like tanks. I guess I was just unlucky.
Total cost of damage using cheap frame and blades - £63 ~ $100 Main blades, frame, plastic plates, main shaft, main blade grip.

I think that you just got an "average" crash in terms of components that broke and need to be replaced. Imagine, you had no issues with your complete tail, servos, etc .. Good deal!!

Yeah, that's fair enough It was just the frame breaking that was the most annoying.

That looks ugly, but I´d also say you can consider yourself lucky. I assume you have your esc under the main shaft? If that crash would have happened to me it would be -1 YGE (mounted under the battery tray).

The safest place is probably on the side frames ihmo. It's too ugly for me though, I have mine under the battery tray, but caps pointed upwards. I have a spare MSH60A anyway so I'm covered even if its destroyed.

I have a FrSky receiver under the main shaft, worth about £20. The ESC under the battery tray only costs about £14, so not too fussed where it goes.
I'd be very nervous about the placement of a YGE though...

Hmmm, this frame has cheapened the look of my heli
On the up side, they were cheap. Although they are a little more flexible than the stock carbon frame sides, thanks to the nice Mini P design, the whole structure is still nice and stiff once all the bolts are fastened up. I'm expecting this thing to perform just as well as it did before. Here's hoping I can go another 18 months before my next repair...

I have used fusuno carbon before and they seem a touch stronger than the stock carbon.
Stock is prone to small breakage: Nose area, and by the canopy mount holes. They will fail massively in a HUGE crash, but it has to be big.... Just had my biggest crash ever: Broke the motor mount(!), motor shaft (!), Y support, both servo frames, 3rd bearing holder, main gear.. Basically turned the front/frame of the heli into mush. Blades, tail system, and shafts were OK. Rebuilding from the frames is a big job. |

Did you do a nose first crash out of a dive or what ?? It's amazing that the blades are intacts with such damage. Did you have the ESC in the nose ?

Yes, ESC was in the nose. One of the caps is SMASHED too. I pulled it off and it is fine with one cap... I've used one of my other YGEs like this without problems before... but maybe I'll get around to replacing it.
I had a horribly botched huge auto. I have auto bailout but I didn't really realize what was happening until it was too late. Of course it hit two feet from the edge of the runway... on the pavement, skids down, which is why the nose, frame/undercarriage took all the damage. The trailing tip of one of the blades is a bit soft and damaged, but I'll epoxy it back together - done that before too and it has worked ok. |

I'm flying cheapy Fusuno fiberglass frames since my first crash with MP. Orange is color suits MP well. Currently flying 2nd set.
With regards to conductivity, I'm used to stick to inner side of each frame strip of self-adhesive aluminium foil, 1/4 inch wide, running from boom mount to motor mount. Five minutes job and does not need to be touched again. |

Thanks for the tip - you just reminded me to make sure I get the grounding done before I maiden this new frame, probably this weekend.

I have no idea whether or not the wire shown between the boom mount bolt and motor mount bolt does anything, but I've now flown this without issue, so I'm a happy bunny.
