Default Orientation training and simulation helped

I had an incident this morning which made me realize how helpful the simulator can be, along with real life orientation practice. I'm new to heli's. This morning, I didn't reset the timer on my transmitter when I put a fresh battery in the heli, and didn't know that it was actually counting UP, not down, so the warning never went off. I was in a banked turn, going from side-in to nose-in when the battery cutoff started.

Two nice outcomes: 1) battery cutoff was similar to how it is in the simulator, so I realized what was happening and I didn't try to keep it airborne, and 2) I was able to get the heli level quickly and land softly about 60 feet from me, somewhere between side-in and nose-in.

A few weeks ago that would have meant a $50 repair job, most likely. The sim and all the boring orientation exercises paid off, and save me real time and money!

Thumbs up

Couldn't agree more.

Formal training exercises and GOOD simulators are priceless. Many will think, "but I want to fly in the air, not be bored ground scooting", but if you don't learn properly, you probably won't stay in the air much anyway, if at all. Plus you'll likely be spending some big repair bucks.

There are many FREE flight training plans on the web. A couple I'm using are:

I'm sure there are others.
