Bob:
Wow -- thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to not be more specific in my question above. My HDE is one of the align carbon fiber ones, all CNC except the blade holders, and it has the full blue gearset, including a blue one on the tail rotor spindle. Its got a JGF 450th and a Kontroniks 40-6-18. I'm aiming for stability, not 3d (camera coming soon). I'm using 335 blades and the Flybar weights. I have a 13T pinion right now. Should I go to the 11T? |

Hmmm not ever having a JGF 450th I just dont know. I would try 11T first for your camera ship. Go to 13 if you need more power and head speed after trying the 11.

Hiya Bob, hope your family's alright. anyway, i just wanted to let you know, i finally got my new xl CCPM and in the process of building. As I've said before, this is my first heli. I started out by soldering all the connectors on the esc (25a align) and on the motor (430L).
My question though is, I was able to succesfully program my esc already, but whilst doing so, I noticed that the motor was getting hot, I triple checked my connections and everything was spot-on. No shorts or anything, it was just getting hot, not just warm but hot. After I programmed it ok, tested it, and it was spinning fine. Any ideas? cheers shaun |

The motor gets hot just sitting there not spinning? Or are you running it at some really low RPM?

Should the Collective Pitch Control Arm rub on the frame ?
The inner face of my Collective Pitch Control Arm is rubbing against the frame. I am concerned this may make the operation too stiff or not smooth enough. I cannot even slip a piece of paper between the frame and the arm.
It was like this as soon as the arm was snapped on to the frame, before inserting any screws. Screwing it in and attaching the arms to the head assembly made no appreciable difference to the feel of the operation, which suggests that it is dominated by the friction against the frame. Is this normal ? Should I be shaving he frame or arm ? Could I lubricate the plastic-on-plastic interface and if so, what kind of lubricant is safe for the plastic ? Thanks, Kenneth |

Take the arm off (it's tuff to get of BTW) and sand it.... Do you know exactly where it is rubbing? It needs to be smooth as possible. Mine was like that and i had to sand the sides of the slots in the frames a little.

I was thinking of a short within the motor... or perhaps a fault with the esc. :?
As per Bobs videos, the esc program beeps you hear are the motor. Maybe something is a miss inside. Was it beeping correctly? :?: |

Hi blaze,
Ah, that I did not think of, but I don't think there's a short within the motor or esc, yes I was able to program it correctly. The tones were ok as per the manual, then I tested, the motor ran ok. I programmed it for: no brake soft start 60% cutoff heli mode (no governor) I have the 25amp align esc... |

Hi Bob, I just wanted to ask, I'm currently in the process of starting to build my XL CCPM (1st time heli builder and hopefully flyer) and just checking if I have the right sequence of following your videos along with the align manual. (and this is aside from my weird hot motor post)
or do i have anything criss crossed somewhere? cheers shaun 1) HDE Build Overview 2) HDE Build Steps 1 through 3 - Head and Seesaw 3) HDE Build Step 4 - Flybar cage and Flybar 4) HDE Build Steps 5 through 8 - Washout, Swash, and Head 5) HDE Build Steps 9 & 10 - Main Gear and Landing Gear 6) HDE Build - Frames and Mechanics 7) HDE Build - Installing the Motor and Adjusting the Pinion 8) Trex Electronics placement and overview (28 Megs) 9) CCPM Setup Part 1 (58 Megs) 10) CCPM Setup Part 2 (58 Megs) |

The manual I had with mine for doing these vids is different than what is shipping now. Either case you have the right order how I would build it. However since you have a CDE #8 will be a bit different since it is SE based but the concepts are the same.

Ok cool, thanks Bob, I'll follow the list. I kinda figured the #8 will be different, but I guess I'll just go with the majority, batt in front of course, rx in back right, esc front left and gyro at the rear with a custom mount i guess

esc in front and rx in boom near the tail blades? hehe! just kidding, please do expect a lot of questions from me...man, this will be good.... btw, Bob, I was just thinking, actually it would be really cool if Align got your videos and bought the rights to it, to have them shipped along as an added Video Manual for every kit they have. How cool (and profitable) is that??

Align is very well aware of my videos but they have not contacted me in any way to use them.... I would be glad to do so and not even charge for it. These videos are free and I want them to stay that way. But if they offer exchange for parts or something I wont refuse
Bob

Ah...I sure do hope they use your videos one way or another, I for one find them very, very informative as a supplement to the manual. For a heli beginner, the manual is very detailed, but IMHO, it lacks thorough explanation (unlike some manuals from Great Planes for example, that has narratives which accompany the diagrams/pics) instead of blown-up diagrams that could prove to be a bit confusing...
The videos provide more detail and depth and much more importantly, the experience that you have from building their kits is an advantage so much so that you can provide invaluable tips while building that the manual does not mention. For example, the use (or not to use!!) of the included R48!! and lots more of course.. You're doing all these for free and I do hope you get your credits from Align eventually, because from the group here in Helifreak, we're all really honestly thankful!!! I know you're not charging them (Align) if in case they do use your vids, but like you said, parts or upgrades for your own use would be great.... or maybe become a test pilot cheers shaun |

Dear Bob,
great work, it has really help me a lot with the setup of my T-Rex HDE. now, as you suggest to install the GY401 under the boom, have you any suggestion how to install and setup the Align HeadLock Gyro (the one with the blu led). I've mount it on the top of the boom with foammy adhesive tape. It works fine ( a very little wag that I'd like to avoid). Is it better to move it under the boom? do you have any picture to show me? Many thanks for your shared time with all of us....... Marco
