Default Novarossi .57HR Owners Thread

Thought I would start a owners thread on the freak. There's a good thread going on the otheRR site that helped me quite a bit as far as initial carb and shim set up.

This motor looks like a jewel. Sweet manufacturing/machining. Typical Italian stuff. The crankcase casting is sweet, and quite unique. It has cooling fins cast into it everywhere, including around the bottom of the case. The rear cover even has fins cast into it.

Running 30% nitro I added the .2mm shim to the already installed .3mm shim, totalling .5mm. Good starting point I've read. The motor ships for a standard 20% setup, but includes a .1mm and .2mm shim for higher nitro percentages.

I set up the carb as recommended in the other thread where as the idle position should be half way between the low mark on the carb and the first mid mark on the carb. This worked absolutely perfectly. GREAT TIP!

The needles where set perfect from the factory for initial startup. 4.5 turns in from full out on the low needle and 2 turns out from full close on the high needle. The manual actually says 4 turns in from full out on the low needle, but people have reported the motor would not start, so the factory updated their settings, but not the manual as of yet.

My motor fired on the first try and idled perfectly on the bench. I'm going to try to break it in tomorrow. Will report back.

I paid $379 for the motor/pipe combo from Grand RC. Pretty darn good if you ask me for a 2.4hp motor and tuned matched pipe. It's suppose to swing the Trex 600 blades at 2180 at peak power (18,500rpm), but people are setting up at 2250.

Can't wait to try it!

Well, pretty much broke the motor in today. This is the easiest starting motor I have ever owned. It fires up within a half second everytime. Tuning is the easiest I've ever done too (I've tuned both YS50ST's and OS50 Hypers).

I started at 1800 headspeed for 5 tanks of fuel. On the 5th tank I did a few flips and half piro-flips, I could tell this thing has power. On the 6th tank I cranked it up to 2100 headspeed and started flying it a little more aggressive. This thing has POWER! My 600 now feels more like my 700 powerwise! I can't imagine cranking this thing up to 2250 headspeed, but I may try it tomorrow

This motor sounds sweet too. My buddy even commented on the different sound it makes.

Lovin this motor so far.....

Excuse my ignorance, but what is that piece in the second- and third-from-last photos?

That's the header included with the pipe. I wanted to show the nice machine work and porting of that piece. Power is made there

It's a 2 piece pipe similar to a Hatori. It uses o-rings and rubber dampers to cancel vibrations into the pipe. It also makes the pipe more inexpensive to buy because you can buy "just" the pipe if you already have the header.

Here's another:

And mounted:

Hey let me know how that motor turns out. I bought a 53. about a year and a half ago. I didn't seem like it putout as much power as the TT53 and the carb was very touchy. Now i need to replace the piston and rings but don't know where to get the parts cause ross sad they stoped making the 53. Oh which was a airplane motor with a heli head on it.

Xahhax, get one you won't be disappointed. They are very powerfull. I have one in my Velocity and I'm trying to finish break-in and now tunning... Running into issues(not engine related) so I'm waiting on some parts.

I've messed with a 57 for a while in a 600 and the thing is just awsome. One of the guys at our field got one for his Vibe.. He tried the Redline, YS50, OS50 but never liked the power it had with them. He installed the Rossi and bow he's lovin it.

I did a backplate mod to mine to use with the Spek. sensor but its in the Outrage 50 section and I don't think I can repost pics in here.

I've heard that the next batch will have the backplate mod. Done to it so know one will have to do it on their own.

Sure you can. Just right-click on a thumbnail in the other thread, copy the link, paste it in a post, and put [IMG][/IMG] tags around it.

I think my decision has come down to the Nova Rossi and the KME, mainly to avoid the tuning hassles of an extra needle.

Also got the Novarossi in my 600nsp and can confirm the thing has awesome power and ticks over like a sewing machine.

I had initial problems from new though, It was eating plugs one after the other so I took the engine out again to find the head bolts were almost loose.

Fit the extra .1mm shim on top of the original alloy shim and boy does this engine pull now.

I have put 4 gallon of Optifuel 20% through this engine and it just gets better every flight.

Ok here's some pic's of the mod for everyone that wanted it.

Here's the bits I used for the dremel- round carving tool and the stone for clean up... Be carefull witht the carving bit as it will remove material fast. So take you're time and go slow.

Here's a couple different angle's of the aftermath.

Here's one with the sensor test fitting. You'll have to trim and cut out some of the mounting hole area as the on the Rossi set a bit further back then YS and OS engine's.

Check this out I was nosing around the Novarossi site and ran accross this. A inflight adjustment set for the 57 and 91 engine's for a carbsmart. I sent off an email asking a bit about it and was told it's gonna be around 15.00. just thought maybe some of you might like to know.

So far I love the Novarossi. Aside from better performance, I like the way it sounds!

For me, tuning was a little tricky, but I did add extra shim to run CoolPower 30. I was used to feeling the base plate (os.50) for a good idea of temp, but the base plate on this was hot every time, even running the motor cooler than recommended (180 deg).

I now run it at about 215 deg, near where Novarossi says too! It loves it.

Anyone using the exhaust gas cooler? I put one on my os.50 and I think the run times went up a little!

Funny you should mention that- My original glowplug didn't last through the first tank! Dead. Just slapped in a trusty ol' OS8 and went back to break-in.

I got mine at the local hobby shop, but they pretty much matched GrandRC. I think the price is reasonable there...
