Default E-Flite P-51 Mustang Parkflyer

This is my E-Flite P-51 Mustang Unboxing, Build, Maiden Flight, and Review video. It shows me unbox, build, fly, and review the new full-house Dallas Doll P-51 Mustang from E-Flite.

This is the BNF Basic, which means it doesn't come with a battery or a charger. It does come with a receiver to bind to your Spektrum radio such as a Spektrum DX6 like I used in the maiden flight in this video.

This is my first park flyer sized P-51 and it is the first plane I have ever owned that comes complete with flaps and retracts, which was a bit intimidating to say the least.

Horizon Hobby and E-flite did a good job overall this RC plane in spite of the cons I have noted below in the flight review notes. I am still in awe of how well it flies. It was modeled after the "Dallas Doll" North American P-51 Mustang Warbird and this one certainly looks the part.

Flight Review Notes:

Cons
- Paint flakes off way too easy and glue is required
- Arrived with dinged up flap
- Slightly underpowered
- Used up more battery than other HH warbirds

Pros
- Tracks really well right out of the box and required no trim
- The AS3X did not interfere with the flight
- Quick and easy build overall
- Comes with flaps and retracts

My overall conclusion is that If you are on the fence about buying this like I was, jump off and get your piece of World War II history today. None of the issues I had with this plane impacted the flight performance in a negative way.

Here is just the maiden flight for those that don't want to hear me talk lol

Thanks and if that is the type of plane you are looking for it might just make you very happy

I did just update the OP, so before you buy it, I recommend you check that out too.

Yea I really like the looks and the fact that it comes with flaps and retracts. I'm also a fan of warbirds. I just need to master my sport cub a little more and then on to this one.

That is a good point about getting your other planes down. This is a big step up compared to my other planes.

Also know that the finish isn't as good as it looks in the video compared to my other planes like the FW-190.

My LHS ordered the new B-17g for me. I am thinking about getting an escort fighter to go along with it. The 17 is 1/48, can't find anything on size of this one. What is it's wingspan?

It is approximately a 44" wingspan. You could always go with the Ultra Micro P-51 for your purpose. It is a 16.2" wingspan.

Here is the same plane with scale flying

So I was able to get out and fly my new Mustang today after not being able to fly since the maiden over a month ago. In many ways it felt like the maiden all over again as you can see by how poorly executed my take-off was. It was still a great flight and I still have the grin on my face

I watch with envy .... My Mustang is away for the winter. Never even got a chance to get it out of the box.

I also have the Mosquito and Spitfire, both have now been dismantled and put away for the winter. I sprayed the Spit with D-Day stripes and it looks brilliant in the air !

Reasonable flying days during winter are few and far between here so I keep a few winter hacks for flying during winter, all the good stuff is put away until spring !

Wow! That Spit looks amazing

I hear you on winter basher planes. I bought my Archer for that very reason. I put in a good 20+ minutes of flight time on it today with just two batteries. I am not so sure I want it to be a basher anymore, so I ordered floats for my Super Cub to be my winter basher

How does the Mustang handle with the flaps ? .. do you use an elv / flap mix ?

I am very interested in knowing how you get on with using floats ... I was toying with the idea of using floats on my super cub for when the snow comes. Keep me posted :-)

Got it done today, maiden. Wind blowing, snow snowing, went to our frozen lake Winter flying area and put it up. All true about an amazing flying plane. Wow.

It handles really well. I set it up in my DX6 exactly how the manual said to do it and it is smoother as silk. In all of my videos I have landed with half flaps.

It really is great isn't it? It is quite the opposite of the one I just maidened today...

This is some scale footage taken the other day cruising through the sky. This plane is exactly what RC Planes should be

This video shows my buddy flying his with views of Mt. Baker and the Twin Sisters. It also shows slow scale and trick flight footage on a windy day.

Enjoy!

Hi all you p-51 flyers. I maidend mine last weekend and truly is a very realistically behavioring plane. However, as I mainly do fly heli and fly planes as a way of improving orientations and getting used to speeds, I like to upgrade mine with what WebOcalc came up with. An APC-TE 11-8. This is where I noticed the following concerning stock setup. The motor used is a BL 15 950KV one with 34A cont and 42A burst current draw. The ESC however is only a 30A one, so even way under the lowest current draw of the motor. Burning it is therefore perfectly possible! What is the reason however this does not happen? It does mean that the 4-bladed prop draws not more than 30A from the ESC. So even on highest loads, take-off and "vertical" it shouldn't take more than 30A from the ESC. Is there some setting made by elite to limit the current draw from the motor?
My setup with the 2-blade prop APC 11-8 loads 34A from the motor so an adviced 45A ESC is required.

Could you fill me in in how this stock setup is possible without electronics failing, the ESC is clearly the weak link....

Thanks all!

I watch these videos with envy.

My P-51 has been in its box waiting since October last year. The weather here is beginning to get bit better now so hopefully I'll get mine out for its first flight soon.

I wish I could help, but I am a straight stock kinda guy.

I can't wait for you to get out and fly then! Please let us know how it goes and even better, capture it on video if you can.

Okay, this is a bit old, but I just got this mustang (along with the Ultimate2) a few weeks ago, and I LOVE it! so fun and easy to fly, and it looks damn good.

My only complaint is that I was a little disappointed in its top speed. Would an ESC upgrade fix that? Thinking the CC Talon 35 (nothing too crazy) or maybe the Edge lite 50 (a little crazier). If I'm going that route, a new motor would be in the que as well... Might save the Lite 50 for the Ultimate...

I just don't won't to overpower the thing and rip it apart...

It is still new enough for me to protect mine like crazy lol To answer your question, it is a well built plane, so I don't think you will rip it apart unless you fly it like you have been drinking.
