Default And so it begins...

Ya Hoo! All the parts are in, I think, and I can finally begin building this heli. Took forever to get past all the bills and other projects, but I'm finally here. I got this G5 from towertsk. He described a problem with vibration which I believe I have figured out. It appears the Tail Drive Gear Assembly shaft is bent. It will be replaced during the build and hopefully that resolved the problem.

The first of the build posts will be tomorrow, but I thought I would post a pic of all the parts. Whoops! Most of the parts, this pic does not include the gyro or receiver. They are in the box in the back, I missed them as I unloaded the box.

Anyway, here is the pic.

Hmm... Ok, I don't have all the parts. Although I usually go with EC3s, I'm going to give the XT60s a try. See if I like them. So I will be ordering them later tonight.

Good to see another one going together. Enjoy the build!

My two are freshly dusted ready for the snow to melt.

Ditto - great to see another G5 come to life.
Sadly not too many of them around.
You're sure to draw some curious onlookers at the field.

@ main rotor blades: If those are the original FG blades that came with the kit, they are wood-cored. Although in my experience they balance and fly well enough, they do tend to warp and get out of track. That got old fast, so I fly strictly CF blades now, and paint them to make them more visible (the Outrage 360mm blades are all black like the FG blades).

Also, looks like you have a full-sized ICE 50 there. Great controller, I've got one too. But fitting it under the canopy is a challenge. I ended up opening up the bottom of my canopy to allow room for the heat sink. No problem really, but a bit of a nuisance. If I were to do it again I'd go with an ICE Lite as you really don't need the cooling. My controller comes down at ambient temp, and my logs show peak currents of only about 18A, with 5-10A averages.

I've got ICE 50s on both of mine, under the tray and while its a tight fit, i can get both canopies on without modification (unless its the old style ones before they relocated the AR bracket, i have a couple of those too, no way they go out without new holes).

Be sure to post up how you end up wiring this, these things are kind of a pain to wire, especially if you have a discrete FBL controller.

Thanks for the replies. No fbl controller, just a futaba GY520. You can see the flybar in the pic. I did consider the ice lite, but I saw that others had used the heat sink'd ice. I prefer them over the lites.

Great gyro, too. Got one on my G5 as well. Enjoy the build.

Can you be more specific? What is the p/n in the manual?

The plastic sleeve that guides the tail control rod? If thast the one im thinking of, i think i could lend a hand there...I never used them; i run straight unsupported 3mm carbon fiber. My first G5 kid the rod looked more like a rainbow out of the box, so i just junked it. probably have the guide though?

Yes, branflake, that's the part I need. Can't find it on any site. Just wondered if the Rex 450 parts would work.

Those sites are out of stock. If you still have some you no longer want, let me know. I'll take 'em.

The OD of the Trex is 12mm, I'll check my boom later tonight.

I meant for purposes of the guide...12mm is 12mm so a trex one will work provided the rod is the same diameter, and i cant imagine its not. Lots of trex/"generic" 450 things were used on this bird.

I found a pair of these with screws. PM me your address and ill drop em in the mail?

Hey, S0laris, I see you've migrated from the G5 to the Warp 360.
As these are in the same "450+" class with 360mm blades, how would you compare them, and how do you like the Warp?

A club friend just got one recently, and I saw it fly last weekend.
It freaked me out - 360 blades @ 3000 rpm!
It flew like it looked - like a mini-TDR, fast and insanely maneuverable.

The G5 is a great flyer.

BUT once I started to throw it around more with the higher rpms, the G5 showed its limits.

The Warp has been sensational so far and takes anything i throw at it.

There is no point to go to a warp if the G5 does all you want if that's what you wanted to hear.
