I don't know if you can solder but I just built/bought the Dell 6650 power supplies off ebay for $40, and hooked them up in series and now my PL8 is happy again. Each supply is 900w and you don't have to worry about grounding issues.
Here's a thread that explains everything. https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=310694 |

3s packs are 12.6v peak. So total wattage will be lower than 6s. If you are charging the 3s packs at 20 amps that's about 23 amps from the Pb battery. That should be easy for a good Pb battery.

I have the two DPS-600pb PSU's running 24v. I like running two chargers and was looking at my next purchase to charge my 12s stick packs and 6S 3300's.
What would better suit two PL6 (MAX 40amp) or one PL8(MAX 60amp)?

Re: pl8 power supply
Either one has a 40A output limit. A pair of PL6's will give you more output amps and watts than a single PL8.

I've also have never had an issue in the 7months of owning one charging my 6s packs for my 550 and 700 and i'm sure with the type of charging you'll be doing, the e-fuel would be great. From what I understand, and that's very little as far as electrics go, is the 240v versions like you need for Aus and here in NZ don't have some of the same problems as the US120V versions? Could one of the electrical guru's correct me if i'm wrong and clarify. At least you'd get almost immediate support from the LHS if, in the unlikely event, something were to be faulty or fail. One of the +'s from buying from the LHS |

In Australia the modified PSU's are not allowed at the MAAA club fields.
I use them at home, but have a meanwell 2000W for my mobile charging case that I take to the club fields. Im not sure on your future plans but once you go up 5000mah packs, the number of charges you will get out of the deep cycles is not many, if you don't intend to fly 10+ times in a day, thats fine. But for me, I would want a lot more than that, so I am looking at a generator to run the PS to PL8's, unlimited charging all day(petrol limited, honda 2kva, full tank = 15hrs runtime).

What's the reasoning behind that?

Something to do with them being not common ground, blah, blah.
I think if I put it into a box so no one could possibly touch it, it would have been acceptable.

Is there an MAAA ruling or spec doc one can review to see the details? I didn't see it listed on the MAAA site. BTW, when done correctly the supplies do have a common ground.

Its not a MAAA rule, its a club rule. But there is actually state legislation against unapproved modifications. I guess if you have license to do the mods or get approval from an authorised person, you will be right.
