Mikado discontinued the 5mm ID mod .7 pinions. So if you find one its a limited time offer.

Well, that is highly irritating.

4.98 mm (0.19 in) They will work with the stock 480 motor.

That's kind of weird that so many people are stripping there mod five gears. I put a KDE motor that is a lot more powerful on my 480 and have not stripped the stock to geartrain yet(40-50+ flights). I have other helicopters so usually don't fly more than two flights in a row on this one though. I wonder if the back to back flight heating up the Pinion is the culprit? I also fly pretty high had speeds around 2500 to 2600 and fly 3-D mainly. I'm not very hard on it but I try LOL.

So what happens than when all the 5mm Mod 0.7 pinions are gone..as Mikado are not making them anymore. Are the newer Mod 0.7 pinions 6mm? If so how will the new pinion fit the stock motor (assuming the stock motor shaft is 5mm)...

Yeah,,,that sure sounds weird. Some of us here keep stripping and i am sure many more out there who own this heli have no problems what so ever..
Will try meshing my gears better using the stock parts as i have ordered these for the moment. Will probably use a magnifier to ensure that the centre of the motor pinion lines up with the centre of the main gear !!

Try your first 300 foot McDoogle and see how the main gear holds up

The MOD 0.5 herringbone main gear (on the 480) is going to be a lot stronger than the logo 400 straight cut 0.5 main gear and I was always able to strip on the logo 400.

There are two kinds of herringbone gear strips. There are the ones where the gear strips with no signs of gear melting from heat. This is usually caused by too much backlash or the pinion is not properly set height wise.

And then there is a strip caused by high temps which are usually from not allowing the gear train and motor to cool down or the pinion is just too tight against the main gear.

Is there a 6mm shaft available for the Scorpion? Maybe re-shafting and going with 6mm pinion options is a better option?

After I flew mine today I touched the pinion. It was fairly hot to the touch. I am going to borrow a temp gun from a friend and see what it shows.

You've seen my 1200ft double/triple mcdougle's before and the gear held up. Lol it's my new secret trick so we have to keep it hush hush until the funfly.

I temped mine at 100 and the motor was at 135.

The gear has not been an issue for me.

ok so what pinion can be used to get stock head speeds with the 5 MM shaft-looks like the biggest is the 15 tooth? P/N 04215 for the 550.

thank you -

Maybe it's just me because I've only had my 480 for one day but isn't the main gear in the first picture up side down? The arch(point) of the herringbone in the manual is going in the clockwise direction. The OP's picture looks like it's counter clockwise.

I'm still very unfamiliar with this heli I just noticed because I was looking at the manual all last night putting mine together.

Default 480XX Motor Choices with 6mm Shaft?

What are the motor choices for 480 with 6mm shaft?

I just picked up a used 480 that has mod7 main gear and already want to upgrade the motor.

The picture in the manual is wrong, one of several "typos."

That's sloppy you would think it would be revised by now. I noticed some loctite indicators on lock nuts which I thought was odd.
I'll have to see which way mine is installed when I get home

How are you guys setting the mesh? You set the mesh by finding the high spot on the main gear and setting NO lash....none. You don't "press" the motor up against the gear, just allow for no lash and it will be perfect..
