Eventually want to try 4s, want to start out on 3s to get a feel for the setup, then give 4s a try. Have you built your dd bird yet?

Default Stretched DD450, Flybarless, DDVP Tail

I would like to thank Johnnycat500 (JC) for selling me the Direct Drive kit (frame & shaft).
I am sharing my project using such versatile frame.
Initial test flight was successful and the heli was very stable. (sorry, I did not take a video)
I do not fly 3D and I'm thinking of putting it in a scale body.

Here's the setup:
1. Stretched boom and clamp from HDX500. (I had to drill new holes to accommodate the boom clamp)
2. Tarot flybarless head
3. Electronic Stabilization for the flybarless setup is Align 3G.
4. Tried both MAH 385mm CF blades and a 350mm. (I seem to like the 385mm and the V2 motor has no problem swinging it)
5. Castle Creations Phoenix ICE Lite 50 ESC; using governor mode
6. Landing gear is from my old Corona

Direct Drive Variable Pitch (DDVP) Tail -- idea based on postings from RCGroups:
1. 1800KV brushless motor
2. CNC tail from Trex 450
3. Turnigy 18A ESC; using governor mode
4. I'm using main blades of MCPx as tail blades (shortened to 75mm) - I got the idea from the forums as well.

DDVP setup makes it tail heavy.
To counter the weight, I'm using two batteries --- a 3300mah 3S for the main motor and a 1300mah 2S for the tail. Each motor is powered by a separate battery.
Both ESC are connected to the Throttle channel using a Y-cable.

I'll try to take a video this weekend and share it in this forum.

Thank you again, JC, for your creativity which made this project possible!
I'm sure this will become my favorite heli to fly :-)

Had to put my DD CP450 on hold for awhile, but recently was finally able to get this puppy finished and into the air. Wanted to post up a couple of pictures and a video and said thanks to john for making the DD frame. This is truly a one of a kind bird and is a treat to fly around the yard.

My DD all up flying weight with battery is 1006g. that’s not to awful bad since the my HK 450 Pro with the same 3s 2200mah battery weighs 888g.

DD CP450 flight video
DD CP450 rc helicopter (6 min 20 sec)

She flies good, but the head speed on 3s is low so she missing that pop when doing pitch pumps. I have a couple 4s batteries on the way that I will give a try. Also have the parts coming to stretch her out and put 360mm blades on. Fingers cross, hopefully 4s and swinging 360mm blades will be just whats needed to make this bird a prefect sport flyer. Will post up my results as I get the parts in. No matter what, as it stand now, this bird is still sweet for my flying style and prefect to fly in my front yard.

Thanks guys
Was so stoked to finally finish the DD CP450 build that I had to post up some pictures. I’m really digging this bird a lot! Got in a couple more flights and starting to feel a little less nervous when flying this puppy.
Even did some backward flying…wasn’t pretty, but had her going backward a little during the last flight. So I’m doubly stoked! Once I get the 4s batteries in hand, will definitely post up my impressions.

O-Yeah, flight times on this bird are totally sick!

Man…the highs and lows of this hobby.
Received my 4s batteries today and was super stoked to try them out on the DD CP450. Talk about power…well for the 5 seconds the bird was in the air, it felt like a lot more power. I forgot that I never notched the main shaft after installing the main tail pulley. Yep, after getting her a few feet off the ground, the pulley let loose…well I think that was the problem. Not 100% sure as the tail was also tore up pretty good to. Either way I got some work to do getting her back in the air. What sucks is I knew something wasn’t right when I started to take off, but kept going anyway. O-well, when I get some time I’ll patch her up and give it another try. Hopefully next time goes a little better.

Bummer . I can't tell you how much money I would have saved if I just backed off when it didn't feel right

Hey Bud, I decided not to mess with the DD bird until all the stretched parts I ordered came in. Figure hey, I really needed to completely tear down the DD and start over anyway, so if I was going to do that, just as well wait and rebuild it as a stretched 450. It worked out perfectly to, received the last part needed yesterday and the wife and kids are visiting her mother today…sweet, so had the time to tear the DD beast down and rebuild her from the ground up.

Replaced the main shaft with a spare that I had JC make for me and this time I made sure I notched the shaft properly for the main tail pulley and DD motor…fingers cross, hopefully things hold together this time. Didn’t have any extra feathering shafts for the EXI head that was on the DD bird so I switched the head out with the one on my HK Pro, which I like better anyhow. The DD450 is now sporting 360mm carbon blades with the Tarot 480 stretched boom…sweetness!

Okay on to the bad news, well not bad news. There’s no flight video because the tail was not holding very well and I was not risking an crash so she only got about a minute of flight before I called it quits. I’m too tinker out tonight to mess with it anymore. Hoping tomorrow I get a chance to mess with it a little more and figure out what’s going on with the tail.

And Hey, please don't give me too much grief over the different colors of yellow, you know I'm colorblind.

Sure hope I can figure it out Brother. I changed the tail assemble quite a bit from what I had. Same tail grips, but different tail box, slider and blades…am using the same gyro though. I knew the larger main blades would add a little extra rotor torque, but man…she’s kick-in hard on pitch pumps….seriously hard. This is just on 3s, I’m thinking it’s going to be worst on 4s.

Okay, got the tail straighten out.

When I assembled the new GSun Dual-push tail pitch slider with the blade grips I forget to do Finless’s tail flip mod. Flip the grips (now tailing edge control) and all is good.

Now on to the next problem…the tail is bobbing up and down. Not sure where to start on this one. I do wondering if low head speed is causing the bobbing. I’m sticking with 3s till all bugs are worked out and the 360mm blades are definitely creating more lift. Might start by reducing the pitch curve and see what happens. ATC have you ever experiences tail bobbing on one of your builds, if so, what was the cause and what should I be looking it to fix it.

I did video the flight and hope it’s clear enough for you to see the bobbing. I took it super easy and didn’t keep it in the air to long, just enough to get a feel on what was going on.

Lookin good HH. When I first got the DD 450 pro going it was bobbing the tail up and down. More head speed fixed it. That was on 3s,I never tried 4s.

Thanks Johnny!!!
Reduced my pitch values to give me less pitch and the bobbing is gone…sweetness!!! Loading the video now. Half the flight was in normal mode and the second half was idle up just to test the waters so to speak. Everything seems to be running smooth on 3s other than the slight bogging at full collective. She ready to give 4s a try, but I’m a little nervous to try after what happen last time. Think my best bet is to start out by reducing power to about 80% and go for there.
