Default Pyro 850-400 versus Scorpion 5035-380

Has anyone compared these motors on 14s on an 800-size machine? I'm wondering if one is better (i.e. more powerful at 1800-1900 RPM) than the other? The Pyro is certainly lighter.

I suspect that the piro is going to be a bit more efficient.

Another thing to note :

If you plan on running a piro (14 pole I recall ) you will need to change ESC. The stock Mikado YGE has a rpm limiter built into the software that won't spin a piro fast enough for the 800.

I've read great things about the 850 piro's , not so much the 800 versions.

Myself after spending on the piro and kosmic , the stock system works very well and not worth the additional expense to convert

I did a little more research on this topic. Here are the physical specifications for each motor:

Pyro 850:
50mm stator diameter
25mm stator length (according to GMauro)
1.25mm single strand wire terminated in a delta configuration
14 poles

Scorpion:
50mm stator diameter
35mm stator length
Multi-strand wire terminated in a delta configuration
10 poles

Based on the stator dimensions alone, the Scorpion should be more powerful, although I don't know how the 14 pole vs 10 pole thing will play out. According to the motor winders, a 14 pole motor will require the ESC to switch faster than for a 10 pole motor, so I guess your ESC choices might be more limited with the Pyro? Probably a moot point because everyone will run Kosmiks anyway.

Anyway, it kind of looks like the Scorpion will be the heavier, hotter, and more more powerful of the two.

Instead of changing the ESC, you can send it to YGE and have it re flashed with the stock firmware instead of the mikado YGE limited firmware, and also have it converted to support 16S in case you ever want it in the future.

Was this the original stock motor supplied when it first came out??

(Take this how you chose.)

If so......

When I had my first Logo 800 I felt it lacked at the max recommended rpm, not that I needed it it just did.

Coupled with having tail issues I sold it very soon after release.

Having now got an airframe and blades only I opted for a Kosmik and a Pyro 850-40. Difference over the original stock combo and this is night and day from what I remember. Much MUCH more happier. Already done more flights that when I first had one and much happier with it. Its a keeper now!

I've been considering the 850 also.

Quite happy with the stock scorpion , now at 202 flights and 1 crash.

Sometimes I feel the motor is best on the first run of the day ( fully cooled ) and the second flights isn't as good.

I wonder if there is a heat soak issue ? I let it cool off for a long time , say 20 mins.
I could understand if I was pounding it back to back.

Any thoughts or better yet experience with this theory ?

I would not have thought that after a 20min cool down it would be an issue?? Being your not in a hot climate also?

Could be a fault with the motor??

Either way if you do go with the 850 you will have some fun for sure

Not too hot out.

Last weekend we were in the early 20's C , 23-24 degrees I'd guess

Just a thought about the heatsoak.

I know the piro's are a little more efficient than a typical scorpion

Or is the piro that much more powerfull and therefore not working nearly as hard ( and generating less heatsoak / overall max output )

There just so expensive , if there's a marginal ( more power in all fairness ) improvement then funds spent on 2 more flight packs may be a better overall value in the end.

Just passed 200 flight mark on the motor. Had it apart the other day and it looks good.

When talking about efficiency if thats around 4% more, in these big motors producing 5000+ w power the difference is rather huge.

It was some time ago, well it was when they first came out but all I remember was how sluggish it felt at 1850rpm.
Now that is not the case. Im sure the ESC also has something to do with this but its a massive difference overall. The gov might have played a part, who knows?

I got rid quickly as in the end the disappointment with the heli was too much. So did my friend, not long after me as he felt the same.

Its really a different beast now and Im having great fun with it as it doesn't feel underpowered compared to what else Im flying which is good or it would be gone again
