Exclamation Correct tuning procedure

Here is step-by-step tuning procedure of your Demon. I did my best to write it the straight and simple way.
This is general tuning procedure and it doesn't matter what fw you have in your Demon. It will apply even on the possible upcomming firmware.
Initial settings

Use predefined files for different sizes of helicopter. Files are attached to this post.

Just set Diagnose, MIX, Trim and Tail limits in Tail gyro page.

In MIX tab you want to have at least 8° aileron and elevator servo limits but I advice you having even more like 10°-11°. It's up to your mechanics if you can go above 8° - which is the minimum.
It's not how fast the helicopter will roll. The parameter called "Agility" gives you how fast your helicopter will react or roll.
This is just servo limit for the FBL unit to be able to control the helicopter. FBL unit just can't compensate anything if there's not enough angle on the blades.

Tail gyro gain 60%
Head gyro gain 55%

Put some expo for cyclic in your radio. I recommend having at least 20% expo (softer around center). Some uses cyclic expos even up to 50% so it’s up to you and don’t be shy to try that. Start with 20% and do this tuning procedure with it. Many FBL units have expo already implemented but not the Demon.

Tuning procedure

Hover and give small cyclic inputs. Don’t release the stick but return it back to the center by your hand! You will see cyclic bounce as the springs on your stick makes this shake move when you just let go the stick. Just move it back by hand all the time.

First we look for cyclic bounce particular on the elevator mostly.

We have these options how to get rid of the elevator bounce.

1) Play with the elevator filter from value 2 up to 8 and find the best value for you
  • Too low value and the elevator makes big and slow bounce
  • Too high value and the elevator starts to make fast bounce. It looks like oscillation

2) Increase P by 5 points and watch for changes. You should see crispier stop by increasing it. Don’t go above 55 but stay at the value you think it stops better.
  • You get more precise stop and faster reactions by increasing the P. However too high P will lead to not precise tracking in big air stuff. So increase it just enough or go 5 points back in case you will lose tracking performance. But only after the tuning procedure is done as the tracking performance can be tuned in the tuning procedure by different parameters.
3) Increase the D gain in case you need to get tune the smaller elevator bounce.

Now let’s go flying.

Fly normal speed forward and give collective inputs. Watch for the dolphin. Reduce it by increasing the head gain. If you don’t see any changes then reduce the head gain to the point where it starts getting worse and go little bit higher. You want to find “enough” gain but don’t have to go high like crazy as it has only negative influence.

Note:

You can’t have absolute zero dolphin like on the sim when you fly for example 2000rpm@13.5° collective on 700 helicopter. There still will be just a little bit of dolphin but just a little. The most import thing is you can’t see anything like this in maneuvers such as a straight roll in FFF and some other maneuvers where real dolphin plays the role. It has to track perfectly which is the key. Not FFF and giving collective inputs like crazy and expecting helicopter going up/down like in sim. The point is there should be no dolphin in maneuvers.

Now fly forward and give fast elevator inputs to make square loop. You know like you want to do the square instead of circle. Watch the elevator which should be stopping without bounce. Play with the Attitude holding range from 8 to 12 to get it stopped precisely. Just increase it to the point where it stops precisely but not more.

I advice you using the Real time tuning for this fine tuning or even for the major tuning. It makes things much easier and you will directly see what’s happening and what this parameter really does with your helicopter. I like this feature and I’m using it all the time.

FAQ

If you still see some elevator bounce in hover then try these parameters in this particular order:
  • Elevator filer one point up or down and watch the difference.
  • Increase the D for elevator
  • Decrease elevator gain a little
FFF and helicopter wants to rise up on its own
  • Decrease Decay rate

Elevator doesn’t feel locked in enough
  • Play with Attitude holding range

I need better reaction or crispier feel
  • Increase the Initial response
  • You might want to increase the cyclic expo while increasing the Initial response as it’s going to be hard to control around center.

Try that procedure and write here your experience. It shouldn't take you more than three batteries to tune it. That's the key. Once you start messing around with all parameters then there's obviously something wrong and you're probably lost. Then start all over again and write your comment here.

I might change the tuning procedure a bit according to your findings. I will always edit the very first post in this thread so it will be always up to date.

Although I am not sure if it is necessary or not, is this tuning procedure and initial setting samples update according to new firmware. V202 ?

There are new default files for 202 made by me. The first post has been updated.

I'm not 100% sure with the smaller helicopters so I would like you all to let me know how do you like it. The big helicopter's file is very well tested. Just don't have that many small helicopters to fly with

These are fantastic settings on my Diabolo 700, Goblin 700 and Goblin 570. Best I've ever had in over 2 years with this system.

Goblin 500 is more like 500. Just try that.
There are not many changes so you can't go that wrong with both of them.

thanks for your answer and the great preset file!

i used your file for the 500 and maidened my goblin 500 today with it - without any changes (beside the required changes to the model specific settings).
everything went very well. the goblin (my first bird in that size) was locked in in every situation, tail holds and stops like creazy and the overall feeling is very good.

thanks again!
