Tony.
Paint your surface with multiple passes. First two passes are "mist coats", which dry quickly and seal off the edges of the masking tape. And then do 3-4 more passes, gradually building up the color. Main reason of color bleed is that you are trying to cover the area with one single thick pass, and the paint ends up too wet on the suface.

A little bit, yes. Depends on the paint and dry time - but thats part of the point of thin, multiple coats. Shouldn't take more than 3-5 minutes between light coats. Slow and steady.

With the plain white fiberglass canopy from helidirect. Is it recommended to still prime it white or can it just be sanded and cleaned then painted?

I got an airbrush for x-mas and ordered two of the white bodies myself.. Are they good to go for painting or do you need to prime?

I'm just going to guess and say go ahead and prime it. Better to prime and have it then to paint and find out that you did need it. I was actually going to start painting today. I picked up paint made by http://www.autoaircolors.com/ . I got it at our local artists hobby shop. They say this stuff is great because it gives all the benefits of auto color paints but with water based cleanup. Check out this video.

This guy shows different paints to airbrush with and why. Also check out his other videos they gave me great information to along with the project in this thread to get started. Especially the clearcoat video! I hope I can do it almost as well as the one in this thread!

A sneaky trick it to mask and then throw down another pass of the base color - it seals the edges cleanly - then follow up with your new color and voila.

+2. I either do that, or a quick shot of intercoat clear...

If the OP and any other contributors can email me the photos and enough info so I can synch them with the text here, I'll format and post the whole thing on a web page on my server ... for long term viewing (and add a link here). Or, if the OP wants to prepare a html page with this tutorial content, I'd be happy to host it... ( HF might be as well ).

Am I the only one not able to view the pictures?? I saved this link because it's such a great post that shows step-by-step of how to paint a canopy.

It appears as if the web site the pics were linked from no longer exists...

I PM'd the OP quite a while ago about restoring the pics somewhere, but never heard back. I'm gonna try another approach...
