Default Anyone using 24 VDC 55A 1320W Power Station?

Hi,

I will buy a power supply for a PL8. I am considering this power supply. I haven't seen a review about it so I want to ask here. How are your thoughts about it? BTW I am also considering Chargery S1200 Power supply.

http://www.store.revolectrix.com/24-...-Station?ext=F

Thanks,
Burak

Haven't used it, but keep in mind the PL8 manual states you may need up to 1700 watts of capacity in your PS to charge at 40A (maximum on the PL8).

This also depends on the pack cell count you are charging. For instance you can max the Powerlab8 out with 6s packs with a 1150 watt supply. For 3s it only takes 575 watts. If you are never going to charge 7s or 8s packs, then a smaller supply is all that is required.

If you want to size the supply to max out 8s just in case, that's OK too. 14s is gaining in popularity, so you never know what the future holds.

1300W is good overhead for charging up to 6S voltages but anything over that and you are really maxing out the supply. I personally like the idea of building my own supply since it's even more powerful, easy to do, and over 10X cheaper than buying a ready-made one. Even if you put it into a carrying case it's still a lot less than just the supply alone; but that's just me.

If FMA carries a supply I doubt it's any bit of a slouch. They have to honor the warranty so they're at least backed up for a year worth of use.

Given that perhaps the most common packs above micro flyer size are 6S and 3S and given the buck/boost discussion, why did revolectrix choose 24/12 volt output for this charger?

By building your own referred to above do you mean repurposing a previously built server power supply, purchasing the components and building, or something else?

Do the fans on this supply run all the time? Or are they temperature controlled?

Thanks,

Kevin

Depending on the supply, variable fan mode is possible.

Here is a link for the HP DPS 600PB supplies:

Guess I missed this a while back, but yes. I repurpose server power supplies. They're really simple to modify and you can get them for really cheap on Ebay if you know how to search for them. After that it's adding a pull up/down resistor and soldering on your output leads.

The revolectrix power supply appears to be a pair of server power supplies anyhow. I once asked if they were, and if they were new or reconditioned or just used, but never got an answer. I doubt your getting two new server power supplies for ~$200.

The DSW (Helifreak user) ones look like the best pre-modded server ps to me.

I inquired about raising the voltage from one of his power supplies- got a response that can be raised to about 25.5, right above the buck-boost for 6s , as long as the voltage doesn't drop under load, which it really shouldn't.

They are new supplies, not used. The fans are on all the time and Revolectrix has not published a fan mod.

To avoid buck boost transitions the loaded supply must be at least .8v above the pack voltage. I tried this with a pair of DPS-600PB. I maxed out the supplies about 13.5v each. Any higher, they would trip the over voltage protection. Resting at 27v, the supplies easily dipped into the 25v range under load. This is still BB range. All it did was move the transitions to later in the charge cycle.

Yes, we have 220V.

BTW, I am using Mean Well 3000W 24V power supply for 2 PL8's. I found this supply cheaper in our country, so I bought this instead of Revolectrix Power Station. I am very pleased with my setup.
