Default Confused?

Hi all

Just flew my Dominator 700L with all new Radix 710mm blades and Zeal 105mm tails.
When I landed after first flight, the tail blades were badly chipped and damaged!
I checked the clearance and it looked good, albeit it very tight.
I'm wondering if that may have done the damage or the tar surface I fly off
which does have small stones and blades do get chipped now and again.
Normally the damage is not as much though, when the tail blades pickup small stones.
I'll have to take a very close look again and see whT the reL issue is next flight.
Just got me thinking!!

Have a look if the tips of your main blades have any chips on them. That would indicate that the main blades touched the tail blades during the flight, causing the severe damage on the tails. I have had that happen in another heli and it was just like your case. I heard a "click" during the flight but didn't give too much attention until I had landed and the tail blades were in bad shape.

Yes thats exactly what happened to me.
I'm sure I heard a sharp click. Even remember thinking something wasn't right.
Just looked at the mains. Possibly a tiny nick on 1, but hard to even see. Just when you rub your finger it feels slightly deformed, but only a tiny amount.
But I just cannot see how I cannot run 710 main blades with 105 tails.
Guess I will put a new set of tails on and have a very close look at the blade clearance.
Otherwise back to 700 blades!!
Great pity as these 710mm gave a noticeable change in feel. Even more stable and locked in. Liked them a lot.

I have attached a couple of pics of what was the result of my case.Very little chip on the main blades but can't say the same for the tail blades.

How tight were your main blades? The main blades may be clearing the tail blades on the bench with the blades straight on their grips but if they are not really tight, the blades can fold during flight causing them to come closer to the tail blades. That's why I run mine super tight on bigger models.

Other than that, go over your setup again and make sure everything is tight. I have seen reports of others running 710s on this model without any issues but different setups and flight styles can yield different results I guess.

Similar looking tail blade damage to what I have.
One thing I've noticed is the Zeal tail blades have a straight edge at the tip
unlike the Align curved tail blades.
I reckon that 1 to 2mm at that part of the tip, may be the difference.

I may try running Align tail blades with these Radix mains and see.

Thanks for the pics.

Wow. Lucky the bird didn't come down. I was about to say maybe sand but that damage is probably from a strike.

I run the nitro boom when using larger than 700mm blades. On my 700's I use rail 716's with rail 106's hard 3d no issues the nitro boom gives an extra 10 mm in length so no worries on clearance

Just for clarification - all align 700 booms are 785mm except for the 700NDFC boom which is 800mm. This is the one you want. However, you will also need the corresponding torque tube and tail rod.

Yes just confirmed my 710 mains are just touching my 105 tails.
I'm talking 1 mm touch, but enough to destroy one third of the tail blades.
So I'll try find 100mm tails or go back to standard 700 mains and 105 tails!!!

I would go back to 700 blades and call it a day because there is really not a good set of 100mm tail blades out there. Or just get the nitro boom and tt and stay with your current setup.

I stand corrected it's 15mm longer but i need them with the 716 mains. Works perfectly BTW. I fly both versions
716/106
700/106
I love the sound the 716 rails make barking. Aweasome

My setup as well. Rail 716/106. I tried it with a set of 116s out back and it's just too close.
