Tail Servo Fail
Very disappointed, just trashed my HK600- well of coarse I can rebuild it but should not have happened. A brand new tail serve seized up after 4 minutes in the air, ( Blue Bird BMS-661DMG+HS ) I only changed over the one I had in there as I heard a few good reports about this one & the one I had was a bit slow with the Quark Gyro. There are so many around & so many opinions Im not sure what to put back in after the rebuild, I just want something reliable & trust with this helli, not a good look twisted up on the ground. Just waiting for parts now- Any suggestions guys -

DS20X-GCD is $28 here.
http://www.allerc.com/hyperion-atlas...vo-p-5146.html I'm running one on rudder as well as DS20X-SMD's on cyclic. They are made by SJ Propo in South Korea who also make Gaui, Airtronics, Graupner and (probably) Tactic servos. It is a half metal gear and half carbon/poly gear servo. the output gear and the last gear before the motor shaft is carbon/poly and the two gears in between are metal. They have a plastic gear set that has 4 sets of those two gears for a couple bucks so you don't have to buy the full gear set if you only need one of the plastic ones. The standard sized Hyperion servos seem to default to 50 degrees deflection from center instead of the usual 45 degrees but this can be changed with the programmer. Interestingly if you select the "Futaba" preset in the programming application it changes to 45 degrees deflection and 1520us center pulse. Adjusting the servo deadband can improve performance in certain cases. On the Robird G31 I found that increasing the servo deadband from 1us to 3us removed a slight twitch I was getting in hover with the governor enabled and allowed me to increase the gyro gain a bit more without causing stop bounce. The Promodeler servos look pretty good. I have no experience with these but Audacity is known for putting out good products (they make the Pantera P6). The logic boards are made in Taiwan and they are assembled in the US. http://www.audacitymodels.com/Produc...V/Default.aspx http://www.audacitymodels.com/Produc...V/Default.aspx Last edited by Atomic Skull; 09-28-2013 at 12:47 AM.. |

Dang, that is one of the most informative posts on a tail servo I have ever seen just off the cuff like that. Nice work A.S.

When it comes to the electronics on anything 500 class on up, I go for fast hi-end servos for the tail. Their going to cost more, but on a 600.... I won't take a chance!

I now have my helli back in the air- I did buy the Hyperion Atlas DS20X GCD - Very smooth servo- I don't have the programmer so I am running my Quark at 1520us 250hz so I hope it will be ok, seems to hover lock in really well - I am going out for a fly today, Thanks

Those blue birds scare me I put the same one on a 450 (Blue Bird BMS-661DMG+HS ) figured I would have a nice fast servero with a bit of weight to it to ballance the 5000mah pack i had on the 450 but it also died on the first flight.
That was a good wakeup call to get good servos especially on anything bigger than a 450. I have a HK600 with an align DS650 tail servo, but that Hyperion Atlas DS20X GCD looks good to me, I may have to order one. |
