1 more one-way bearing failure
New guys, please skip the kit supplied one way. If it has tiny fingers next to the needle bearings, you are looking at the less reliable option. I don't know why the replacement one way is a different type. That makes no sense. I lost a chunk of main gear when mine locked up and it could have happened at higher than 3 feet up and splashed the darn thing hard. Thanks for whoever suggested the zip ties holding the landing gear on. Only lost one corner's worth of ties, so I feel lucky. Oh and that was flight number 2 from a virtual noobie. These big helicopters have a huge pucker factor. Still high from yesterday's run up in the garage.

I have had aprroxamately 3 of the 61tooth rear main gears show about 3or4 teeth in a row missing after a normal flight or hover. I dont notice anything until landing and spooling down it starts sounding like the belt is jumping teeth, but the belt is not loose. Could this be a 1 way problem?
It seems to hold fine on spool up and flight and freewheels ok when turning by hand the way it is supposed to. If i could fix this problem I wouldnt have to worry so much about flying it. |

I think it's worth the time to take a look at the inside of the one way. Some of the plastic fingers might be broken causing hard to diagnose spin up issues.

Mine didn't freewheel smoothly with the original bearing. Was always a little notchy. The motor also would not spin the main correctly sometimes giving a distinct CLUNK noise. The guys at my lhs thought the one way needed more grease. Not really. With the new one way installed it smooth like glass. It also helps to not make rookie error with a twisted tail belt. Guilty. Looking forward to tomorrows' good weather.

Ktypto,
I haven't heard of problems like that before - are you sure that you tail belt isn't twisted too much ?. Cheers, Mike. |

Yes i am sure the belt is installed correctly I installed it the same way i would when i install one on my trex-450, it spins free by hand. I tried taking the one way out berfore and lubing it with royal purple lube they sell at the hobby shop. I may have to take it out again and inspect the inside of it more closely.

So i removed the one way bearing from the heli and very carefully inspected the inside of the bearing. It did appear that the cage was made of plastic but did not look like it was coming apart in any way. I lubed it and reinstalled it. /next time I am at the hobby shop i will inspect a replacement part and see if it looks different like the vxb bearing.

My stock owa was off the heli and in the hands of an experienced builder at my LHS and showed no damage either, so was just re-lubed and reinstalled. The next spool up took 4-5 teeth out of the main and locked that OWA shaft. Had to take a hammer and a drift to drive out the shaft. Walked back into the LHS and got the "Oh, yeah, known problem." response. One 20t replacement OWA later, my spool up is eerily silent, and vibration free. The inside of my replacement OWA looks like the inside of the bearing at the VXB site. That is, there is some kind of shield covering the guts of the one way mechanism. The stock one way has fingers you can see next to the needle bearings.
The Gaui mafia at the shop today (kind of a little sales event) all agreed that the stock one way was crap, and recommended to a new guy buying the 425 kit that along with a motor pinion, go ahead and grab the improved OWA also. But, as always, YMMV. --Jason |

I ordered mine from Boca bearings and have never had a problem since. Original bearing locked up on the first flight.

ok i stopped by the hobby shop and looked at a replacement one way they had and it had the plastic fingers also. So i just ordered a replacement bearing from VXB bearings. I just hope its not too hard to remove the old bearing and install the new bearing into the original gear without messing up one or the other.

Is it suitable for both 19T and 20T OWB?
