Default Cordless Drill Starting

I bought a Hobbico 12v starter and became tired of hooking it up to a car battery so I hooked it to a 6s 4400mah pack that I had extra because of a crash on my Trex 600. Needless to say it lasted a day and since I've used a Dewalt 20v non impact model and it works like a dream. Also its easier to tote around and its a multipurpose tool. If for some reason I find I have flooded my engine I turn it on the exhaust side and VERY slowly turn it over till it spins free. I rarely have to do this maybe twice but was unable to when i had the Hobbico.

My question is since I am thinking about dropping the $150 plus for the align starter, is the cordless drill method bad for my shit or should I keep using it and save the $150. Again thanks for the input.

Default Cordless drill starting

I've used my cordless drill on many occasions. Out of necessity due to problems with various "Heli" starters I have. I have had no issues starting 50 to 90 engines. However my drill has adjustable torque and I make sure to set the torque just high enough to turn over the engine. I've "Heard/Read" that it's possible to damage the con-rod with drills.
But I've never had an issue to date.
I hope this is of some small help.
Regards

Thanks I've heard the same things but no problems ever. If there ever was a problem it was leaving my starting wand for the "starter" at home.

My Sullivan starter hss five times the torque of any cordless drill.
No adjustable torque either and no clutch.

Cordless drills are fine.

My drill had way too much torque even in the highest gear. I broke start shafts and starter wands. Using a dynatron with a Makita battery is just right although expensive.

personally I went with a hobbico 180 torqmaster after watching a video Mcrackin made to start my os91 and os 105hzr. Just starts the engine much easier than the align starter and is a bit cheaper than a Sullivan. The Align starter had kinda a jackhammer effect that ruined the starter shafts on my whiplash. And while I am on the subject of Mcrackin thanks for the return spring idea has saved me twice

Ah the throttle return spring I haven't put this into my bag of tricks yet. If its saved you twice I think its safe to say I should and it is a good idea.

Do you think a 12v Black and Decker Lithium compact would be powerful enough to start a 50 size?

It's pretty powerful, not quite an 18volt dewalt but for what it is pretty powerful.

I think so. I have noticed that with the engine primed and the glow plug hot that speed is the key factor. I think all drills will spin the engine fast enough to start it. In fact I am sure a lot of people like me have started their engine on the break in stand with just a flick of a finger on the prop.

That's awesome.
I really liked my Hobbico until I shorted it out and fried it.lol....

Throttle returns should be a stock item.
