Tap and die set, why?
http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-helicopter-tools.html
he says that a metric tap and die set are pretty useful. What is this thing for? google tells me its used for rethreading stuff. Under what circumstances does this happen? after a crash? when you've been ham fisted with your screws? Thanks!

Depends on how much of a 'builder' / tinkerer you are, your budget, time, and cost of your helis/parts.
If you have a cheap, mass produced 450 sized heli, you can buy any part with threads for <$20, so it is probably fine to just replace anything that strips. Custom scale heli, you might be re-working some threads now and then. |

Also for cleaning.
Another use for taps and dies is to clean off old loctite and gunk. Think of the tap and die as scraping the gunked up part.

Heh, I was a machinist for near 20 years. I have taps and dies everywhere! They are extremely useful if you do much repairing or making of mechanical stuff.

I really wish I had a tap set. It's one of those things you never think about and would never consider needing... right up to the point when you really need one. In plastic parts, for example, instead of just threading a screw into fresh material or using a self-tapping screw, you cut new threads into the part with the tap. It gives you a little extra precision to ensure it's perfectly normal, straight, and clean; it makes subsequent installation of fasteners a little easier on your hands and tools; the tooling also actually cuts the threads into the part instead of more or less pushing material out of the way as with a screw fastener, and helps remove that cut material back out for clean bores.
