Yes there is a new version of the YS 91 being tested. There is 3 or 4 pilots here in the USA that have those prototype motors.
It is not larger than a 91 as I have seen rumors floating around. David |

No the engines I have seen are .91. They were being used in F3C helis. 15CC 2 cycle is the largest that can be used in F3C.
Don't see YS making any 2 cycle heli engines larger than 15CC unless the FAI rules change. Mr. Yamada didn't start making the .80 YS till he saw the new engine rules for FAI back in 2001. I was sitting with Mr. Yamada when he read the new approved rules at Toledo Trade show in April 2001. David |

So now YS is the engine to have (again)? Just a few months ago I sold two YS91's in my two Stratus and put OS91SZ-H PS's in them and switched them to 8.18.
I've been having the same problems and frankly I think the pump system sucks. Maybe *I* got *two* bad engines, dunno. I'm seriously thinking about selling them and going back to YS91's. Can you run YS91's at 8.18 and still get the power? |

I'm personally running a OS sz w/o ps. cool power 30% and SB 18, with a modified engine (dont know how to explain it in english, sorry, but the cylinder liner has been modified). And it does produce a lot of power. I think it's not necessary to use a pump, because from the begining to the end of the tank, there isn't any carburation problem !

I would guess the exhaust timing has been raised some on the liner. As for a pressurized fuel system(aka Cline) or the pump system. That would depend on what type of flying you are doing.
As for me personally. I prefer the OS 91 CSpec with the OMI Big Bore carb and Cline setup. Runs very consistent and produces great power, David |

I have been running a YS with the 937 for a long time now in a R90se but recently got a Stratus, It feels more powerful than the raptor but I guess thats due to less weight as I have all the same running gear.
I run 8.18 ratio at 1950HS and its great, Bucket loads of power but I think my motor is getting a bit tired after 250litres or so but it still TicTocs and Piros all day long. Im going to try a Non pumped SZ in the same Machine with the same pipe (938) and see how it goes, Im hoping for more power but if its tempramental the YS might find its way back in there!!

Gee Dave thats a lot of fuel , has it been rebuilt and if so what did you do ? Just bearings or liner+ piston too ???
I've had a few sets of bearing through mine now as well as a new liner and piston due to my bad one day . The bearings were just due to corrosion problems .

Just 3 sets of bearings, just recently put a new diaphram in. It still goes well but it just seems a little down on power.

foam
i wander if you mount the tank to the upper frame instead of the bottom plate if that will reduce the foam in the tank?

I just put together a stratus which happens to be the first MA product for me.
It has OS SZ-H non pumped with MP2 muffler. 3 test flights show ZERO foaming at the tank. I will do more testing tomorrow. |

Hi,
I am running Stratus with SZH. My last vibration which i keep thinking it was the engine turn out to be a pair of unbalance blade. Try checking your blades ? Kenny

My blades (both Main and Tail) were balanced perfectly - I checked them very carefully (I always do now). Tried everything then changed to a YS and everything went silky smooth. Could have just been a bad SZ-H w p/p. The same fan was used with both engines and dialed to about 1/2 thou ". I see lots of people do fine with the SZ in the Stratus so I must just have had a bad one.

what ratio did you ultimately use?
Mine is 8:45 but I'm considering trying 8:18 for giggles. |

Stuck with the 8:18 ratio and 1850 headspeed. Flys nicely.

I have been flying the YS on 8.45 since I built it. I do get a little foaming in the tank but this seems consistant with other YS's I have seen. The machine is smooth and makes spectacular power at 1950HS. I am currently running the SB-16FH and will be switching to the SB-18 around January.
I have to say I love my engine, it has been flaw less since day one. I have almost 6 gallons on her now anf it's still running like a clock.

Hi THX1138,
Why are you switching to SB-18 ? i thought SB-18 is for OS engine and SB-16 is for YS ? Kenny

Unless you modify the header. The SB 18 will not fit the YS engine in stock form. The header is made for the OS Engines . On the OS engines the mounting bolts are further apart than on the YS engines.
I guess you could use the SB16 FH header on the YS and the SB 18 pipe. David |
