Hi

You can use it with what ever you want. Both inbuild bec, or seperate power. But its mostly ment to esc's with inbuild bec..

It only takes over when the other power system fails, and voltage drops. Its a oneway backup, so power can't go in, only out

Best regards

Default Goblin 770

Guys,

I have a new Goblin 770 which is running a Kontronic Kosmic 160 and JR 8717 HV servos. My thought was that this device can plug straight into my V-Bar and should the ESC or a battery burn up in flight that this device would power the Vbar and the servos for enough time to auto the heli back to the gound. Am I correct that this is how the Scorpion Backup Gaurd works? Is there enought power at 5 volts to operate the servos through an autorotation?

Thanks for your insight.

Andre

Anybody have any more info on this claim that the Back Up Guard should not be used with switching BEC's?? See here:

I haven't read the other thread.

But I uses backup guard in both bec and opto esc. And it works fine.

Scorpion backup guard is a oneway , it only takes over when voltage drops. So I can't see why it should do any damage or so to a esc?

Hey guys so I recieved my scorpion backup guard and was testing it on my Goblin 770. I want to let you know my experience and results. First let me say the product in is very nice in design and would be a great addition to most helicopters that don't run HV servos. Frst let me tell you what I'm running.

Goblin 770
Pyro 800-40 Motor
Kontronic Kosmic 160HV ESC
JR8717HV x3 Collective
Futaba BLS256HV Tail
Fullsize V-Bar

After charging the Backup Guard I installed it on the helicopter and pluged the one way servo cord into a free slot on the back of the V-bar. I powered up the helicopter with my main packs and then turned on the backup guard as instructed. I checked that I had a steady red light indicating that the sysytem was working and had sufficient charge (it was at 100%). I then proceeded to test the backup guard by unplugging the main packs and sure enough the system remained powered. The problem is that the 5 volt 10 amp output of the backup guard is not enough to power the JR8717HV servos properly so you end up with lock up in the servos as you try to move them in full up or down.

That being said I would love one of these on a smaller Heli that is not running HV servos. I also hope that scropion comes out with a HV version of this as it would be a great security measure allowing you to perfrom an auto-rotation back to safety in the event a main pack fails or an esc burns up.

Andre

Default Scorpion Backup Guard

I think it's a vbar issue, I had the ar7200bx on the 550 and everything worked great, when I went to vbar , if i make quick movements it stops or gets real choppy and hesitates . Everything but the gyro stayed the same

I forgot to mention that I spoke with Inovative Designs the US distributor for Scorpion Products and they confirmed that the Backup Guard will not properly power all HV full size servos like the JR8717HV which is on my G770. They even mentioned that a HV version of the Backup Guard may be on the horizon.

I have mine mounted now on my 550. I wanted to be able to remove it easily one so I could store it with my other LiPos and to make charging easier because the charge leads are so short. I removed a little of the shrink wrap and removed the power wires. Then took a deans mini, sanded it down a little on the back side and soldered it in place. Bingo works great and is easy to remove.
