Default Building an Airwolf 450...

So the one type of heli I don't yet fly is a scale one.

If I were to build an Airwolf like this one...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/450-size-AIR...QAAOSw-W5UtRhi

It says fits "Most popular 450's"... and I can't stand Align...

So, if I were to use say an X3, or similar option what are the chances I could get it up and flying without too much fuss?

Not sure if I'd go scale-ish (Basically a normal FBL heli frame... with Airwolf "canopy" effectively...) or more realistic like a 4 blade head.

Plan anyway would be to make it fly, pop an iKon / Brain in it for bailout, slef leveling... and call it a day. If I liked it, I might go deeper with a different size... (600-700)

Completely depends on YOUR definition of "too much fuss". Without knowing the dimensions of the fuse and the dimensions of the mechanics, it is hard to say.

If you want an Airwolf (and who wouldnt!! LOL!), go here for a better fuse (cheaper too)....

And for a set of mechanics that will work well....

And please dont put a 4-bladed head on a Wolf! LOL!

Gunny,

Very cool that you are going to do an AirWolf.

Please, do not paint it black. For some reason, people keep painting the areas which should be gunmetal (metallic gray) black.

Depends. When Wolf was unveiled for the first viewing, it was gloss black, chain gun pods were yellow. It was only changed later due to the black not filming well and the gloss causing reflection issues, and the chain gun pods were changed to green (not sure on why they changed that).

When Jack Sessums made the original static models, and painted the flying models built by Ed Baxter and Roy Levi for the show, they were gunmetal on top.

You can see the gunmetal doghouse on this one being overhauled on my living room floor, back in the early 1980's (the fuselage had been repaired after a mishap and is still in primer):

Latest episode of FreeFallRC Podcast is about scale helicopters. Chris Reibert has like tons of experience flying and building scale and is always open and enthusiastic when someone asks him about this other side of the hobby. Give it a listen and then contact Chris. He should be able to help you.

Will do. It'll likely wait till after SEFF, but I'd like to build an Airwolf or a Huey.

Love the wall to wall shag carpeting!

Thanks for the info. I know the full size was painted with Dupont 5031K (Phantom Grey Metallic) for filming, but was pretty sure at the "ribbon ceremony" (prior to filming) it was painted gloss black. I wasnt there so I might very well be wrong! LOL!

Would this work or be insane?

300cfx frame.
450x Tailboom, belt and pushrod.
325mm blades.

And mount in an Airwolf fuse? I think it would result in a nice and light option. I can pop a normal lower kv 450 motor in it, and should do well. Also a 2200 pack fits on the 300cfx.

If it fits, and is lighter, I say go for it. Mine flies good but, lighter would be better. I also have a 450 size AS350 that is like flying a brick.
