YS 56SR or YS 60SR
I have a JR Vibe 50 NEX FBL that I am about to build. I am new to CP helicopters, but want to take this next step up with this helicopter. I do have a great deal of fixed wing experience and am totally dialed in with glow engines, their tuning, maintenance, etc. Also, I have 3 YS 4S engines on my planks so I am familiar with how YS engines have their idiosyncrasies.
I have just about everything to begin the build and just need to get the engine and the servos. Regarding the engine, my LHS has a YS 56SR that they will sell me for $288.00. Before spotting that one, I had planed on going with the YS 60SR since that is what is now being sold by them. That of course is about $100 more. So my question is should I go with the older model? I know I will be satisfied with the power to start off, but will I wish for more as I gain more experience? Is there any obvious/significant advantage that would direct me to the 60 over the 56? I have know other folks with the 56 who when that was "the" YS 50 size engine, were plenty satisfied with it. Another factor that I am considering is that since my Vibe is FBL, that only improves the power factor. Of course it all only gets better with the 60. What do you all think? Thanks, Lars |

A lot of people have problems with the YS/SR engines
The 60 is 2000 RPM down on the 56 I would expect the 60 to have more torque and less power The OS55/YS56 are likely to be a much better choice

The 60SR has a notable power increase over the 56, which is obviously not a slouch. Not sure where you are getting the RPM difference from, perhaps the specs listed online? Yamada (YS) is a small company, and as such, does not spend a lot of money and time developing the specs for their engines. They do these things... but don't have the resources of say OS engines, so I wouldn't say the numbers always accurately represent their products as they might for OS. So I wouldn't get stuck on the posted specs. That's just me.

The Yamada manual details maximum RPM
I would be very surprised if the extra 4cc (7%) returned a significant power difference The 55/56 engines are excellent in the 50 class helis

I completely agree that the 55/56 engines are great powerplants for the 600 class helis. But, having flown a couple of different 50s, a 56, and the 60SR, there is a very noticeable difference in power. Is it a MUST have upgrade? No, not many things are, the 56 is a great engine. I still have a YS 50 that runs great and it still has a lot of life to it and usefulness to give.

Check out helidirect.com - they have the YS 60 for $320. Only a $32 difference, and if you can score a 10% off coupon, then it's the same price as the 56.

YS 56SR or YS 60SR
Where does one "score" a 10% off coupon?

Thanks DRDRUMS for the lead to Heli Direct. It worked out just as you stated... a terrific deal!

Congrats! You'll have to post when you get it installed and broken in. What pipe are you running?

I love my ys 60sr it performs flawlessly but it takes a higher gov gain number and an air tight fuel delivery for it to run properly

As far as pipe... that is next. I will probably go with either the Hatori SAB-1 or the Funtech B323. It looks like the Hatori is a little over 25% more expensive than the Funtech but I have read some good things about the Funtech and how it integrates with the YS 60SR (i.e. it has resulted in good power and "friendly" tuning). Any thoughts from people with experience?

I went with the Hatori, but then Hatoris have a great reputation.
I still have the engine and pipe in their boxes. I'll probably mount them up this weekend. We'll see!

Not yet - life's been too busy lately to get to the install. Too many projects waiting on my bench!
