Default Propeller selection

I am trying to get the right prop for my Turnigy Tek Sumo but I am having a hard time getting the correct size. I am currently using a 7×4 prop and it is a bit on the weak side and not even enough to get the motor even lukewarm. I tried an 8x4 and the plane was hauling some serious butt but the motor came down screaming hot. Would a 7x5 or 7x6 be easier to swing than an 8x4? Not sure if pitch or diameter make more of an impact on the motor.

without a watt meter your guessing you need to know the motor rating and then prop to stay in that range.if your flying planks, it's a must have tool

Another option if you know all the motor parameters (Kv, Idle current, resistance) is to plug it in to a simulation program like MotoCalc. If you fly lots of electric planes its a very useful tool.

I see it's been a while since the OP has been here, but hopefully others will find this useful.

Here's a good read for finding the "right" prop for your bird.

http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/propeller-size.html

Both length of prop and pitch will add more "load" to your ESC and motor. An increase in either can cause an increase in amp draw thus resulting in a higher temp. If you want (or can), try increasing your ESC to a higher amp rating to run the 8x_ or bigger props.

I actually did some trial and error and found this. It seems an inch on the pitch is much less impactful than an inch in length. I have the Tek Sumo flying great on a 7x5 now.
