It's not the clutch material, it's teh gap to the liner.

I was breaking clutches like it was my job. Barely 10 flihgts and they would break. So at Ircha a friend set me up.

Here is what he did. get a new clutch, new liner and a beer. Drink the beer. Preferably a good beer. Save the can. Take the liner out of your old clutch bell. Takes a while, but scrape it out. Then get the new liner, and use it as a template to cut a piece of the beer can out. You want the liner to be closer to the clutch. Glue the beer can strip onto the clutch bell, then the liner to the strip. Take your clutch and wrap one time around it with electrical tape. Put the clutch into the clutchbell and let the 5 minute epoxy cure for 24 hours. Your gap on the clutch will essentially be the thickness of the electrical tape.

I have not broken a clutch in 2 gallons. Longest I've gone. Including one crash.

+1, I did beer can mod a while ago. I didn't use a beer can, but Coke can, all the same and result. You will find the first few flight, the clutch biting much before 1/4 throttle.
I have gone a gallon without breaking a clutch. Long may this continue as I hate taking my machine apart

Regarding Gaui parts, they are not of great quality. So far, the muffler broke in 2. One swash follower broke in flight. The tail boom broke on landing, I generally do a mini auto from a foot or two up to land. I lost count how many times I lost the 2 pins that attaches the canopy to the heli.
I still LOVE this heli despite its quirks.

Cheers

Yep. Google-fu told me too much of a gap on the liner was a common fault so I guess I'll do the beer can mod. Just hope it works with alcohol free beer as that's all I drink

My clutch have survived almost 2 gallons though. So I should be happy...

Default I need advice, how to...

Hello,
I had the same problem with my clutch this weekend - it was quite new - exactly 20 flights.

I am not sure, whether I understand to the modification correctly (maybe because of my English) - could you, guys, describe deeper the modification of clutch bell for me :-)?

Thank you!
Roman

Could you please clarify this part? I assume you disassemble and remove the electrical tape after the epoxy has cured, correct?

Thanks!

Yes remove the electrical tape when the glue is set on your clutch liner. I did this with my Heli.

Thanks kane601

Seemed obvious, but didn't want to assume anything.

Soda can trick worked nicely. Now I just have issues with twitching tail - bobs 5-10 cm to the side, randomly... Tried both a Spirit FBL and a VX1e with same result, so swapped out the DS525 for a DS520 but still haven't gotten around to test it just yet. Tail pitch slider is butterly smooth...

Well, I have decided to modify the clutch bell by can (coke can) as you mentioned, but from preview, it seems that the clutch will be still in small grip when I fix it.
Will it be broken in?
Or am I on a wrong way?

How about engine? Is not too rich?
Or are not there any kind of vibrations (bad bearing etc?)
Maybe, could you place a video of this behavior?

I *think* I have it dialed out now, it wasn't as bad with the 520 as with the 525, and I set the servo delay a bit higher which seemed to fix it. The engine might be running a bit on the rich side, but not enough to cause large vibrations.

I've also put on a Futaba GV-1 as the Spirit gov... yea... no... Really hope I've ironed out the issues now and can start to really lean it out with 30% nitro and get some good smack out of it.

So.... why wouldn't you guys just buy a thicker liner from a different company? Way easier then your mod???

Errrrm... Ummm. Well... *glances quitely past flyswatter*.

For me I was already ordering some parts and just put the liners in the basket anyways. Not an hard mod to do either.

At least now it works perfectly with GV-1 even though I had to "cheat" it a bit to get it past 2100 headspeed. Tuned it in so it's just a hair off being on the rich side with 30% nitro and tons of power. Not like an OP'd electric, but on par with a nice 90 with YS-120 p/w ratio

What liner did you find that worked and was a bit thicker?

The TT Raptor 50 liner will work. I concidered that before I bought the NX4 one, but since raptor parts are getting harder to get I did buy the original one. Requires trimming to size, but otherwise it'll work.

Just had a clutch break on me for the first time. The original clutch lasted well over 100 flights without failure and recently replaced because the one way started failing. The replacement only lasted for 10 flights or so before breaking. I also replaced the bell and liner at the same time and clearance was tight; and checked again after it broke and was still tight.

Thinking back to this thread, I started to wonder if something has changed on the new part and decided to compare the original to the broken one. Sure enough the original one appears to be beefier than the one that failed.

Here are some comparison pics. The one not broken is the original with over 100 flights. Curious if others agree this could be contributing to a higher failure rate.

I replaced the bell and liner with the new clutch. Clearance was tight.
